The best product designers I know end up working with code when designing software, not because they get to the end state quicker, but because they want to have all the data points they can. Programming as Theory Building, and all that. pages.cs.wisc.edu/~remzi/Nau…
“designing much faster than the others” — this so daft and makes it clear they don’t understand design at all. “Designing fast” (or slow) is just not a thing. If you conflate “producing ui by piecing together stuff” and “design” then the former (which is a form of assembly-line practice) can surely be fast or slow.
What makes the practice of design challenging is not how to put a ui or poster together, it’s what the pieces are, what the message is, what is being communicated, how it all works together.
So many of today’s “design” AI tools focus almost exclusively on the production part, on putting stuff together. I’d love to see an AI design tool that forms a deep understanding of a problem over the course of days or months and works like a creative partner. Call me on my bullshit, thinks about the whole, isn’t concerned really about the final arrangement of elements as much as it would understand the story and the message.

I'm calling for a complete and total pacing of the frontier until we figure out what the hell is going on at tldraw
I've been trying to explore what a "design sprint" can look like in an AI world. I've created a tldraw offline board, filled with observations and studies, for me and the team to work on without having to do all the leg work in the understanding / exploration phase. Whilst me and the team have been jamming on ideas, I've gotten Codex to prototype any small interactions that come up.
flash-prototypes.jessica.wor… are all the tiny prototypes. Most don't make sense without context, or even with context! So still needs some work.
flash-prototypes.jessica.wor… I've got a basic idea of 'composition', where I can combine multiple prototypes together in one - this combines gravity concept with light source concept. One day my prototyping utopia will be realised!
I resigned from @tldraw today. I spent the last three years doing quadratic Bézier research at both Tldraw and Excalidraw. Neither team is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to fully autonomous curve-fitting and gambling with our control points. More thoughts below.
