I would have loved to see the 2,000 word version but you’ve done a lot with 600 words! Looking forward to seeing this in print. Thank you so much for visiting the show and for engaging with the work so deeply. 🙏🏼💗

Thank you @KevinBuist! One thought I had while reading was that “generative art” is a term and an art form in flux. Part of my goal with the show was to look at where it’s been and where we are today. Less so future casting. It’s hard to predict how an emergent form will evolve.

Great video and great explanation of why this project is so cool!
I've been asked if the display is showing a recorded video, if it's AI generated, or surprised to learn that the control panel is actually functional and not a prop, so probably best to be clear: Glitchbox is a functional playable instrument with tactile controls that respond to your touch, immediately changing what you see and hear (sound ON 🎶)
Part of the aim of this work is to show how generative systems don't only exist "somewhere else" as a formal description in inaccessible computer code or at "sometime else" as the residue of a program executed in the past. Generative systems can be interactive and participatory - an embodied sensual experience that is immediately responsive.
Video and audio synths were revolutionary, in contrast to film or tape, because of immediacy, it closed that feedback loop: you are part of the system. Which has always been the case, but it just foregrounds it. Where do you end and tool begins? Where does author and audience begin and end? Study Stiegler, study Roy Ascott. Despite our need for categorization, hierarchy, the reality is that everything is connected in complicated ways, and it's not always clear who is steering.

As a curator, working with artists to help them realize a new work or a new interpretation of their work is the greatest joy and privilege.
Announcing Glitchbox, the sculpture. SOUND ON 🔊
Premiering July 12 at @ToledoMuseum in
Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms, curated by @juliaxgulia
Glitchbox began in 2021 as an early programmable NFT: a generative audiovisual system with parameters modifiable via on-chain transactions.
Through an arduous transformation, at the cost of sweat and sanity, Glitchbox now takes a corporeal form of forged iron and electronics.
A fully interactive audiovisual synthesizer, inviting audience members to touch and manipulate tactile controls in a real-time sensory experience.
Glitchbox has many facets (some would say six) thematically that I'll try to get into over time: labour, craft, generative systems as cybernetic systems existing beyond purely digital/virtual as embodied sensual experiences, and the significance of these themes in an era of generative AI.
