It's quite remarkable that that Israel's Jewish opposition parties would rather lose then accept being in a coalition with Arabs. The reason is obvious enough: they're not all that different from Netanyahu. Parliamentary democracy is supposed to make you compromise in order achieve a majority of seats. But sometimes ideology (and racism) takes precedence over the desire for power.
Despite the historic electoral achievement of the two Arab-majority parties in Israel's election, I think it's very unlikely that Eisenkot and his Change bloc will form a government that relies on their parliamentary support. Their unwillingness to do so isn't just due to political cowardice and a (well-founded) concern that it would generate a popular backlash driven by anti-Palestinian racism -- which has intensified since the Oct 7 attacks -- but also because of significant policy and ideological differences. At the end of the day, however much the leaders in the Change bloc loathe Netanyahu and want to oust him from power, their worldviews and policy positions are generally closer to his than they are to the leaders of Ra'am and the Joint List (particularly, the latter): nytimes.com/2026/10/28/world…

We have to face reality - Iran’s Current Leadership Will Not Surrender to American Pressure I fear that the Trump administration's fundamental misunderstanding of the Iranian regime and how it operates persists. No matter what Washington threatens, including the use of MOAB bombs, and no matter what incentives it offers, Iran's current leadership is unlikely to abandon its basic position. There will be no meaningful discussion of nuclear concessions until the Strait of Hormuz issue is resolved on terms acceptable to Tehran's leadership. The problem is that even if Washington follows through on its threats and escalates the confrontation into a full-scale war, it is unlikely to force the Iranian leadership to yield. The regime is prepared to endure extraordinary hardship, rather than submit to American demands. The Trump administration may believe it has won the war. But Tehran's leadership is sending an unmistakable message: it has no intention of surrendering. Washington appears to be confusing Iran's willingness to negotiate with its willingness to capitulate. Tehran may be prepared to strike a deal, but not on terms that would amount to strategic surrender The paradox of Iran’s current leadership is that it is pragmatic enough to negotiate with the very country it calls the “Great Satan”, the United States, when doing so serves its interests, yet ideologically rigid enough to refuse meaningful concessions, even at the cost of a prolonged military confrontation with Washington. Its willingness to negotiate should never be mistaken for a willingness to give up irs red lines including the nuclear file. Intresting days ahead. #IranWar‌ #iran

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

💥As the day unfolds, this appears more and more to be, in the words of Gadi Eisenkot, "Netanyahu conducting an improper influence campaign targeting the public, in an attempt to delay publication of the official election results and to delegitimize the activities of the incoming Knesset."
🇮🇱 As the final ballots are counted in #Israel's curcial election, the country's security agency is investigating unproven suspicions that foreign entities, potentially including #Qatar, funneled money to influence voter turnout in the Arab sector. FRANCE 24's @NTarnopolsky tells us more ⤵️

Stunning piece about yet another old-guard, high-level, billionaire supporter of Israel who has lost faith in it - and in Netanyahu. "Ronald Lauder has never lived in Israel. But in the past year the Jewish billionaire, who serves as president of the World Jewish Congress, has given up his remaining properties in the country, a sign of the deep shift in his views of its future. A deep sense of disgust appears on his face as he recounts this. "I've sold my apartment in Tel Aviv, I gave my home in Be'er Sheva to the Jewish National Fund, of which I'm also the chairman. I basically cut my ties there. Because it has become so…," Lauder grimaces, making a gesture of vomiting. He goes on to blame Israel for failing to make peace, explaining that Israel actually didn't want peace: "I realized at the end of the day that Israel really didn't want peace, but they wanted dominance. And I walked away from it." "You've lost the Democratic Party, and you're losing the Republican Party. And it's all because of foolishness on your part. I want to tell Israelis, 'Shame on you! Shame on all of you. Your fathers and your grandfathers fought for this place, and you're losing it because of foolishness. Period.'" I think this reflects the view of many who fought to establish Israel/supported its creation, but at the same time believed in peace. Perhaps an unjust peace, clearly a peace on Israel's terms - but a peace nonetheless. But Israel has long swapped dominance and control for peace, and it has taken quite some time for many of its original supporters and champions to realize it - and admit to themselves the direction Israel actually is going in. haaretz.com/israel-news/elec…

Quoted in today’s @FT on the growing risk of another war with Iran following Israel’s elections. Netanyahu may have lost his parliamentary majority, but he retains the legal authority to launch another military campaign while serving as caretaker prime minister. The IDF may have reservations about initiating another war, but ultimately the political leadership makes the decisions. The concern is that renewed escalation with Iran could also serve Netanyahu’s political interests by creating the conditions for a national unity government under his leadership. And we should not assume another war would be short or decisive. Iran will retaliate, and there is little reason to believe additional strikes will force Tehran to surrender its strategic assets. The danger is that Israel could find itself in another costly war without a realistic political endgame. #IranWar #iran ft.com/content/53278449-6a8e…
