In 1939, 20-year-old Jesse Lee Bond was lynched in Tennessee after asking a store for a receipt. More than eight decades later, his great-granddaughter, Kyra Harris Bolden, made history at just 34 years old as the first Black woman to serve on the Michigan Supreme Court.

🚨 MILTON FRIEDMAN (1978): Young lawyer asked Milton about when it is okay for a Govt to force a free citizen to act. Did you get the nuance in Milton's question about the difference between "society" and "govt"... Do you think a man should be free to sin?

South Asia's rivers breathe with the monsoon. Before the rains the combined flow to the sea sits near 9,000 m3/s; at the August peak it reaches roughly 209,000, a 23-fold swing in a single year. #rivers #monsoon #dataviz

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐆𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐡𝐢 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐚: 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞-𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟏𝟗𝟐𝟕 A painting that brings together Mahatma Gandhi, pioneering Sri Lankan architect Minnette de Silva and a little-known story from Gandhi’s 1927 visit to Ceylon was gifted to the High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi on Friday, 7 August 2026, by Sri Lankan artist Raja Segar and Ms. Namita Swamy, Founder-Director of Tapobhumi – Oko Centre for the Arts, Bengaluru. Titled Gandhi and Minnette de Silva (2023), the 40 x 30-inch oil-on-canvas work reimagines an episode from Gandhi’s visit to Sri Lanka, then Ceylon, in 1927. According to accounts by historian, feminist scholar and author Kumari Jayawardena, a young Minnette de Silva, aged nine, was tasked with finding goat’s milk for Gandhi. It is a small, intimate episode within a much larger historical encounter, but one that offers a glimpse into the young woman who would later emerge as one of Sri Lanka’s pioneering architects and an influential voice in South Asian modern architecture. Segar interprets the episode through his distinctive “Refractive” style, bringing Gandhi, the young Minnette and the goat together within a vibrant landscape of geometric forms and vivid reds, greens, ochres and blues. The figures appear woven into the architectural and natural landscape of Sri Lanka, giving the painting a sense of memory and movement. The goat, an apparently incidental element of the original story, assumes a quiet symbolic presence in the work, connecting Gandhi’s philosophy of simplicity with the rural landscape of Sri Lanka. The painting also has a personal resonance for the artist. Raja Segar lives in a house designed by Minnette de Silva, giving him a direct connection with the architectural legacy of the young woman he has portrayed almost a century after the episode depicted in the painting. The High Commissioner expressed her appreciation to Raja Segar and Namita Swamy for their generous gift and for choosing to place the work with the Sri Lanka High Commission in New Delhi. The painting will become part of the High Commission’s collection, contributing to its celebration of the rich cultural, historical and people-to-people connections between Sri Lanka and India. hc-newdelhi.gov.lk/en/posts/…

MAJOR: Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $5.5 billion to resolve lawsuits that alleged the company’s talc products caused ovarian cancer. This settlement is less impressive when considering that 76,000 plaintiffs have been in litigation for a full decade, bearing the costs of cancer treatment during that time. Each will receive only $36,000, approximately. In 2020, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $2.1 billion to 22 plaintiffs after a jury found the company's talc-based baby powered caused them to develop ovarian cancer. The Missouri Court of Appeals found "significant reprehensibility" in the company's conduct. Johnson & Johnson have attempted to dodge accountability for their alleged cancer causing product through three different attempts to declare bankruptcy in the last ten years, and made hundreds of billions of dollars during that time.

Bali just banned two Dutch organisers for running a “digital nomad” club that allegedly shut out locals. Meanwhile in SL there have been documented cases of similar (and sometimes more blatant) exclusion. Restaurants, bars, boutique hotels and beach venues have repeatedly been called out for “foreigners only” policies, turning locals away or giving preferential treatment to tourists. There was even a notorious “whites only” party attempt that caused major backlash. Tourism authorities had acknowledged the problem but enforcement was weak, especially with unregistered places. Well done Bali ! Respect is not optional. #SriLankaTakeNote
Two Dutch organizers of a Bali run club are banned from re-entering Indonesia by immigration. Allegations surfaced online the club excluded local Indonesians from some events. Authorities are investigating. The club apologized & blamed errors in its automatic approval process.
