The thoughts expressed on pages 9 and 10 of the book 'Blue Ocean 'Strategy' are an eye opener.
"Consider for example , 'In Search of Excellence' and 'Built to Last' . The bestselling book 'Built to Last' was published some 30 years ago. Yet within two years of its publication, a number of the companies surveyed began to slip into oblivion: Atari, Chesebrough-Ponds, Data General, Fluor, National Semiconductor. As documented in 'Managing on the Edge', two-thirds of the identified modern firms in the book had fallen from their perches as industry leaders within five years of its publication."
The insights in this book are Indicative of #strategy as exploring 'what might be'. Our #strategic choices are calculated guesses. We cannot make them enduring law.
We did a #strategy course together. And when we launched something #strategic, he came around to felicitate with us.
I firmly believe we must find ways to make the #knowledge we acquire more useful. Especially in our part of the world.
I dare say Kairos Afrika is one of the most effective #BulkSMS platforms I have used yet.

I caught up with Shadrack Kubyane of eFama App this past week.
We talked about his Truly Amazing Transitions.
From the highly promising #Blockchain to Farm-to-Fork #SupplyChains.
From life to Alexandra to the heights of Sandton - just across the road.
From "fun and frenzy" living to faithful family life commitment.
And then we asked him, "How do you stay grounded?"

The entrance of the #airport featured a brand new x-ray baggage scanner. Better security? Maybe.
On this particular evening the queue was huge. A concerned citizen was trying to Educate everyone on the value of being orderly as #Ghanaians.
Who thought about this new #process? Who created a new problem by trying to solve another?

My take?
Let's assume this decision was taken in a boardroom full of smart executives.
The natural next step would be to explore some #data.
1. How many people typically pass through the airport daily
2. How many pieces of luggage would a passenger typically carry?
3. How long will this new machine take to x-ray each bag?
You could tell the passengers were furious, the attendants were tired and the machine stopped intermittently. Maybe tired too.
Was there any executive willing to observe this new process even for a few hours?
Was there any mechanism for feedback?
Is this the new normal at #AccraInternationalAirport?
Simply observing one night's flow of human traffic can tell brilliant executives whether they've made the right decision in the boardroom.
Surely there are alternative ways to address the problem that triggered this new security feature.
It applies to firms doing #digitaltransformation as much as it applies to this particular #airport.

Dear #Tech Leader (or any leader)
Avoid kneejerk reactions to problems.
Anticipate outcomes, evaluate impact.
Use models, immerse yourself in the #customerexperience.
We can all help create better experiences.
PS.
Special thanks to Jeremy who created this graphic for my #birthday.

Sometimes I wonder about the #stars.
Do they really want to take #photos with a complete #stranger?
Well, truth is when a star is that high up - in the arts, agric and government - no one is a #stranger anymore.
Todays #challenge: who can spell the name of the #star in this photo? All three names I mean.
PS.
One's personality may influence their pursuits. One's pursuits end up shaping their personality.
It's inevitable.
A good balance of both is a productive #strategy for improving the probability of #success.
Here's how I am spending my #Saturday.
When my grandchildren as my how many #enterprises I #architected , I'll have something to say. 😆
The simplicity of #creativity enabled by today's #SaaS #platforms provides ample #opportunity for business #bootstrapping.
In some parts of Africa, you need to give way to your #employees when they move their motorcade through the motorways.
Or else, the people paid by the #people you are paying may give you a piece of pain on the streets.
Happy #NewMonth Everyone.
And Happy #IndependenceDay Nigeria.

Happy birthday to Jay,
MD & PSA @ Laughing Hyena.
BTW, Laughing Hyena Open Days are happening in #October.
At a #strategy course I took last year, it was mentioned that @Vodafoneghana_ opted to be second place in the Ghanaian telecomms market - a "key challenger". I recently switched from @vodafone #fibre to @MTN #Router by the way.
Why this position might be considered as accepting failure of some sort, it could also be interpreted as accepting one's reality. @MTNGhana is way ahead in many respects. (worth debating)
While it is possible for the former #brand to evaluate what areas of telecomm services they could become a #leader in, a move like appearing to remain a challenger might do good in the long term while they put their act togther soon.
A recent new brand that takes up a similar position is called #LaughingHyena. The brand seeks to sell #locallymade #consumergoods as compared to imported #products. Understanding the reality of the wolrd, they did not say they'll sell ONLY #locallymade #products. They accepted a 60-30-10 model.
Learn more about #LaughingHyena.

This amazing artefact from the Pearson #Airport is an impressive piece.
It is meant to remind visitors about the city they just visited - #Toronto . However, it is labelled Made in #China.
This may not a big problem for #Canada. However, similar patterns are a problem for countries with a BoT gap.
For example I once saw a "traditional Igbo cap" with the label "Made in #Czekoslovakia "
We think nations who are serious about development should pay attention to getting good at making something.
That's why we think #LaughingHyena is doing an awesome job promoting #locallymade #consumergoods.
It is an elegant #strategy.
