So I went job hunting today. People dey see something here...... I said, let me step out and try some schools around my area. I entered one 'seemingly' big school. Got there, saw the proprietress, and was eventually introduced to the proprietor for interview. He went through my CV and said: Interviewer: “Since you studied English, you should be able to take Government and CRS too.” Me: “No, sir. I’d rather focus on my area of specialisation. English is quite demanding. Adding Literature in English to it, is a serious task. Now we’re talking about Government and CRS too? Nope, sir.” Interviewer: “No, you can’t say that. You have to do at least 24 periods a week. Sticking to just English wouldn’t even give you up to 11 periods.” Me, in my head: God, this is never the plan ooo. 😭 Then he said: Interviewer: “A lady came here looking for a Home Economics teaching job, but we needed a Biology teacher. She has been taking Biology ever since. She only asked for a Biology textbook. It’s been six years and she’s doing very well.” Okay ooo. 😐 Then: Interviewer: “Miss Grace, I see you once worked on the Island, and you even have a Master’s. How much are you asking for?” Me: “Can we start with ₦150k?” Interviewer: “Ahhh! How much are the children paying? They don’t pay up to ₦50k per term. We can’t afford ₦150k.” Me: “Okay, how much can you afford?” Interviewer: “We can’t even afford ₦100k. Maybe you should go home and think about it, then come back.” Me: “How much, sir?” (At least let me know what exactly I’m going home to think about.) Interviewer: “We work for the good of our teachers. You can leave here and even start your own school.” Yhmmm. 😭 Me: “How much are you offering, sir?” Interviewer: “We can only afford less than ₦70k.” Me: “Not even minimum wage? 🤨” Smh. “Thank you, sir.” Collected my CV and left. I’m back home ooo. I never see work. 🥲
