When I tell you not to give up, I am not giving you empty motivational quotes. I am speaking from experience. I know what it feels like to put so much effort into applications and still wake up to rejection emails. I know the frustration of watching opportunities pass by and wondering what you are doing wrong. Every week, I meet scholars carrying the same burden. They bring their rejection history, doubts, and stalled applications to me. And many times, the problem is not their ability. It is poor strategy, weak positioning, or simply not having someone experienced enough to spot what they are missing. Once we find the real problem and adjust the approach, things can change. Persistence matters. But the right guidance can save you years of trial and error. If you are tired, take a breath, review your process and get help where you need it. But do not count yourself out. The door only needs to open once.

Na because we no get enough jobs in Naija, or because we wan JAPA, make many of us dey rush apply for Master’s or even PhD. 😭😭 The hard truth is, many jobs don’t actually require an MSc! Give someone with a Bachelor’s degree the right opportunity and proper training, and they’ll deliver. Sometimes, what people need isn’t another degree. They just need someone to give them that first opportunity. But when the opportunities aren’t there, another degree becomes the next available path. 😭

I have seen quite a number of reactions to this CV, so allow me to explain the thinking behind it. I prepared it in early 2025, shortly after graduating from the University of Lagos. It is the CV that earned me a place on the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's in Biomembranes, where I was the only sub-Saharan African selected. In all honesty, I cannot tell you exactly why the committee picked me. I had some strengths like my CGPA, Academic Awards, Research Experiences, etc. What I can tell you is the reasoning behind each choice, and what I would change today. Nothing on that CV was accidental. We were going to be the programme's first cohort, so there were no past scholars to learn from. I simply asked myself what a committee building its very first class would want to see, and then I presented every strength I had. Requirements have changed since then, so kindly adapt this to your own programme. 1. Why 6 pages? The standard advice is 2 to 3 pages, and I still recommend it. However, the Europass format has a lot of spacing. The same content in Word comes to 3 or 4 pages. There was also no page limit that year, so I made full use of the space. If you would like a template of the Word version, my Oga @Demo4show has shared one here: nitter.cf/Demo4show/status/20992… 2. Why a photo? For well-established programmes, I would advise against it. My case was different. Erasmus Mundus rules state that no more than 10% of scholarships can go to one nationality, so diversity is part of how these cohorts are formed. A first cohort would want to look truly international. I wanted the committee to see an African in that picture before they finished the first page. 3. Why my full address? It was not necessary, and I have removed it from my more recent CVs. We learn every day. 4. Why languages right after education? The programme begins in France. I took French lessons for one year at UNILAG and mentioned it in my SOP, so I placed languages where they could not be missed. The message was simple: this candidate will settle in quickly. Looking back, I now know it did not need to be that high up. It can sit on a later page and still do its job. 5. Why list selected modules? I recommend this to everyone. My programme was clear about the coursework it expected. If you compare the programme website with my CV, you will find that every module I listed was either a requirement or a foundation for what I would study. 6. Why all the links? For every project, award or certificate you mention, attach a link. Do not ask the committee to take your word for it. 7. Why so many awards? They were my greatest strength, together with my research experience. Whatever your own strength is, place it where it cannot be missed. 8. What about publications? I had none, and that is not a disadvantage in itself. It depends on how you present it. My undergraduate thesis produced two projects we intended to publish, and we were still writing the manuscripts. I therefore listed them as publications in view, marked "manuscript prepared for" with the target journal. I was clear that they were not yet published. What I did have was a conference presentation. I presented the work at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) international conference, where I was one of eight shortlisted for the External Young Scientist Award. I made sure that appeared in both my CV and my SOP. If your research has been presented anywhere, show it. 9. Why so much leadership? My personal assessment is that Erasmus Mundus selection is about 60% social and 40% academic. You live and study with a small group across several countries. A new programme will care a great deal about whether that group can bond. I wanted the committee to see a team player, and I had real initiatives to show for it. My advice: do not simply copy the template. Copy the thinking. Understand who is reading your CV and what they are looking for, then present your best self.

My advice to anyone starting out: Develop a very strong opinion about yourself. Know exactly who you are & who you are not. If you don't, random people will try to tell you who you are, and you might just start believing them.

One advantage of doing a PhD in France is that you continue to get paid after finishing until you find a new job. You have about 18 months to find a job.

As someone who graduated with a CGPA of 4.45, I will never write an application for an international role and put ‘I graduated with second class upper’. I would rather say ‘I graduated with a CGPA of 4.45 on a 5.00 scale’. Positioning matters; don’t kill yourself before they do

Jesus, Take the Wheel This evening I got into my car for a quick run to the supermarket. Pressed the start button , or so I believed, and spent the next thirty seconds locked in a battle with my car. Something was immediately off as the steering wheel felt very stiff and wouldn’t budge. I pressed the accelerator with the impatience of a man who has places to be. Nothing. The car screeched loudly but did not move. I sighed, gave up, and rest my head against the wheel, frustrated that the engine was faulty and I would have to call my mechanic Mr Musibau who probably has my name saved as “God sent” on his phone— and that's when my eyes drifted to the gearbox. Park. The car was still in park?! Ugh It had never properly started. There was nothing wrong with the engine. The only malfunction in that vehicle was me I guess. I laughed at myself for a good moment, shifted to drive, and rolled off to buy my groceries. The lesson of this seemingly trivial event followed me down the road…. You cannot steer a parked car. No matter how hard you try. I say "Jesus, take the wheel" a lot. Sometimes as a joke, other times because I'm genuinely overwhelmed by the size of an idea living rent-free in my head. I'm a dreamer, and the beautiful thing about dreaming your way through the world is that you see possibilities clearly in your mind long before they collide with reality. The trouble is that the magnitude of what you see can overwhelm you so completely that you never begin. So you sit still, thinking about direction, timing, the perfect plan, the right path, the myth clarity at the very beginning Meanwhile, the car is still in park. Physics explains that an object at rest stays at rest. And I suspect much of life obeys the same principle. We wait endlessly to know which direction to go before we move, without realizing that moving is the very thing that reveals direction. Once the car is in motion, you can steer. Turn left. Turn right. Slow down. Reverse. You can even turn around completely and take another road altogether. But none of those choices are available to you while parked. I know that starting is hard. Beginning anything new and the discovery of what we are truly capable of, comes with a resistance that feels almost physical, like the world itself is testing whether you mean it. And I say this as someone who struggles so much with this. Maybe that’s why this small debacle in my car today feels so deeply meaningful to me because I'm at an inflection point in my own life. I'm trying to start something new, and I've suffered so much in my head, procrastinating, polishing and perfecting a thing that doesn’t exist in the world yet. So I’m gonna start today (for real this time) and find out where it leads. Lumi says as we walk, the way appears. And even Jesus, I suspect, would rather take the wheel of a moving car. So, my friend, this is your sign. Stop suffering in your thoughts and start the car. Jesus loves a moving car. Only then does he take the wheel and steer it towards the depths of your calling. So get out of your own head, and out of his way. A moving surely meets his own luck someday.

Dear Undergraduate, Please do not allow anyone to undermine the value of your chosen course of study. Dedicate yourself to diligent research and strive for excellence within your field, and you will witness positive outcomes. It is unrealistic to expect that all four billion plus individuals in the world will pursue studies in law, medicine, or accounting. Every course offered by the university is included for a valid reason.
Uni is a scam if you’re not doing a professional course like medicine, law, or engineering. Otherwise, you’re just wasting time and millions. Even the time spent studying professional courses barely pays off. How much more wasting years and millions on something useless?
