When Stress Gets Under the Skin 🧠🧬 What if the pressures we face every day can do more than affect how we feel — what if they can also influence what happens inside the body? That was at the heart of a public lecture held at Kampala International University (KIU) Western Campus on Friday, September 18th, 2026, under the theme “Under the Skin: When Society Becomes Biology.” Prof. Sinbad Olorunnisola Olubukola, Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, explored the connection between social stress, biological ageing and the potential protective role of medicinal plants, highlighting key insights including: ▪️ Social experiences can influence biology: Poverty, financial insecurity, workplace pressure, relationship conflicts, discrimination and other prolonged stressors can place sustained demands on the body. ▪️ Repeated stress matters: Stress is not necessarily harmful on its own, but repeated and prolonged exposure can overwhelm the body’s regulatory mechanisms. ▪️ Age is more than a number: Chronological age does not always reflect biological ageing, as environmental and life experiences can influence the body’s biological condition. ▪️ The body works to maintain balance: Through homeostasis, the body continually responds to changes in its environment, although chronic stress can challenge these protective systems. ▪️ Medicinal plants require scientific validation: Plants contain bioactive compounds with potential biological effects, but perceived benefits should not be treated as proven medical benefits without scientific evidence, standardisation and safety assessment. ▪️ Understanding stress starts with identifying it: Participants were encouraged to recognise the sources of stress in their lives and find constructive ways to manage them. E-Learning: Lecturers Receive LMS Walkthrough Training To improve the overall student E-learning experience, KIU Main Campus has today conducted a comprehensive Learning Management System (LMS) walkthrough training for lecturers. Speaking during the session, Peter Oluwadamilare, Digital Learning Specialist, noted that a dedicated E-Learning Training Programme course has been customised on the platform, with a standardised PowerPoint presentation template uploaded to support content delivery. During the training, lecturers were guided through key LMS functionalities, including: • Accessing and logging into the system • Activating user credentials and navigating the portal • Operating and managing the LMS dashboard • Accessing virtual classes and understanding the step-by-step online teaching process • Uploading lecture slides and learning materials • Linking lecturer profiles to their respective teaching courses The hands-on session provided lecturers with practical skills to effectively navigate the platform, manage their course activities and deliver engaging online learning experiences. #ExploringTheHeights

⚖️ A new space for courtroom learning takes shape at KIU Western Campus The School of Law (SOL), Kampala International University, Western Campus, on Wednesday, September 16th 2026, unveiled a state-of-the-art Moot Court, marking an important step in strengthening students’ exposure to courtroom practice. The facility was officially unveiled by His Worship Andrew Kabombo, Deputy Registrar, High Court of Uganda, Bushenyi, who encouraged students to make reading, research and adequate preparation central to their legal training. The ceremony also featured insights from university leadership and the SOL on practical legal education, professional ethics, mentorship and advocacy, as well as a Moot Court competition between Legal Excellence & Co. KIU Researchers Urged to Strengthen Data Analysis and Publish in Credible Journals On Friday, September 11th, 2026, KIU Western Campus hosted a practical workshop bringing together postgraduate students, lecturers, researchers and early-career academics to strengthen their skills in research, data analysis, responsible AI use and academic publishing. Held under the theme “Essential Research Skills for Academic Publishing & Data Analysis,” the workshop featured valuable insights from different areas of research practice: • Dr. Uzezi Idhalama Ogagaoghene, Deputy University Librarian, emphasized the Library’s role as the “house of research” and encouraged researchers to uphold academic integrity while making effective use of resources such as Turnitin, My Loft and the Institutional Repository. • Dr. Wusa Makena, Lecturer, Department of Anatomy, stressed the importance of understanding data before selecting statistical methods or software, reminding participants that “AI is a tool, not a substitute for human understanding.” • Prof. Patrick Aja Maduabuchi, Director of Research, Innovation, Consultancy and Extension (RICE), challenged lecturers and supervisors to develop the skills they expect from their students, emphasizing, “You cannot give out what you do not have,” while urging researchers to verify journals and avoid predatory publishers. • Prof. Godson Anyanwu Emeka, Dean, Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, emphasized mentorship and building researchers who can surpass their mentors: “If we do not build you to be better than us, we have failed.” The workshop was moderated by Dr. Archibong Archibong Nsa, Senior Lecturer, Department of Physiology.
