Microsoft and Bing have been leading on publisher choice and transparency in the era of generative AI. We were the first search engine to provide site owners controls over their content for AI training and grounding, and kept building on our transparency commitment with industry-first AI visibility features in Bing Webmaster Tools. In today's announcement below, we're sharing that we'll adopt an AI training preference at the site and domain level in the near future, which will facilitate the publisher's efforts as it'll be consistent with others in the industry. We will provide more details soon. Bing search results will continue to be unaffected by AI training preferences. Read more here: msft.it/6014abaaO

Now you know how thoughtful we have been about engaging with the community. #WebIQ #Bing #MAI #MicrosoftBuild #Microsoft
As Satya shared in today’s keynote at Build, we just launched Microsoft Web IQ - our next generation search engine for AI agents. It is a new suite of AI-native grounding APIs designed to connect AI systems with fresh, reliable web data for enhanced real-world intelligence including, web pages, news, images, and videos. Search engines like Bing were built for humans, yet the next era of search will be for AI agents. Some estimates indicate that agents will generate 1000 times more queries than all search engines for humans combined in a few years, so not surprisingly, this is an exciting space with many competing solutions already. To build Web IQ, our search team leveraged more than 20 years of technical innovations in Bing and re-architected the stack to serve agent queries most efficiently. Web IQ leads across the three things that matter most in this space: quality, latency, and token efficiency - as you can see in the graphs of the Bing blog linked below. As an example, you may remember Harrier, our best-in-class embedding model I posted about a couple months back, which is still #1 in the relevant industry leaderboard. Harrier plays an important role in this system by helping optimize semantic retrieval, which strengthens the grounding pipeline. It’s just one of the many innovations that helped us build Web IQ. Web IQ is also designed to honor publisher preferences by default, with systems and policies respecting publisher controls and content access preferences across the web. The APIs in Web IQ are already powering nearly all AI agents and chatbots in the industry today, including Copilot and ChatGPT, so Microsoft is currently leading this new and rapidly growing category of search grounding for agents. I’m proud to share this important work and to continue driving innovation that is shaping the future of search.

In the era of the agentic web, the role of the web index needs to evolve to support very different needs across agents and humans. In traditional search, indexing determines which pages a user should visit. Ranking surfaces relevant results, but ultimately the responsibility of verifying information falls on the user. Web grounding for AI chatbots and agents is built on the same infrastructure but answers a different question: What information can the AI use to construct an accurate answer? Search helps users explore, while AI commits to an answer. The goal shifts from relevance and ranking to strength of evidence, traceability, and consistency – and trust matters more than ever. The latest Bing blog post breaks down how this new paradigm is redefining the way we enhance, optimize, and measure performance of the web index to build AI systems that people can trust and rely on: msft.it/6012vMRTK

What an amazing milestone! Bing just hit 1B MAU. So proud to be part of this team! #Bing #MAI #Microsoft #search
Bing just reached a major milestone: 1 billion monthly active users, as @satyanadella shared on today’s earnings call. We’ve added more users in the last 5 years than in the previous 10. I’m so grateful for everyone in Bing and our partners across Microsoft and beyond who have contributed over the years to this achievement, driving advances in fundamentals, differentiation, and growth with passion and tenacity. Few products reach the 1 billion user mark, and few technologies in history have been as transformative as web search. I am excited for our team to continue to drive innovation and competition in this critical area for society.

I’m pleased to share that our search team has open sourced an embedding model called Harrier that is currently ranking #1 on the multilingual MTEB-v2 benchmark leaderboard. Harrier delivers SOTA performance on retrieval quality, semantic matching, and contextual analysis across workloads, supporting more than 100 languages and handles long inputs up to 32K. It is built for the next generation semantic search for Bing and our web grounding (RAG) service for AI agents, which already powers nearly every major AI chatbot today. As you can see in the leadership board, our Harrier model is currently ahead of other excellent models based on Gemini, Gemma, Llama, Qwen, and more. I’m grateful for the hard work of our team to get to this top ranking, and I’m excited to see all the healthy competition in the space, which should ultimately lead to more innovations that will benefit everyone.
