It's unacceptable for policing to look like this in America. This should both frighten and outrage anyone who wants the US to remain a free society.

Cutting US STEM funding in half is exactly what you’d do if you wanted the US to lose to China

Your reminder that Democrats have won 6 of the last 7 elections by popular vote. And it's about to be 7 for the last 8. In any other republic or democracy - none of which have the Electoral College - we would have been referring to the last 30 years as a Democratic Dynasty.

“Kamala Harris will protect your right to disagree with her” is one of the most powerful statements made yet in support of this ticket. Thank you, Harrison Ford. 🗳️💙

Since judicial punishments in the US tend to be tough in general, I'm seldom in the lock'em up camp. But there needs to be a massive (FBI/brings in the Feds level) effort to find these culprits and severely punish them. For all the ways confidence and the reliability of our voting system has been damaged. Destruction of ballots takes things to a dramatic and unsustainable new level which tears at the fabric which still mostly ensures civic peace.
Burning ballots were pulled from inside a smoking ballot box in Vancouver, Washington, this morning, hours after police responded to an arson at a Portland ballot box katu.com/news/local/vancouve…

The difference: The upsetting things said by Trump and Vance are not true. The upsetting things said about Trump and Vance are true. Trump really did mount a violent coup against the Constitution. He and his relatives really did take bribes in office, including from foreign governments. He really was helped into power by Russian espionage agencies. He really did steal secret documents from the US government after his election defeat. And Vance really did, and by his own admission, intentionally "create stories" for political advantage that put residents of his state at risk of physical harm.

Interested in the editorial decision at Axios to label once person at first mention with the adjective, “convicted,” but not the other fella running for the highest office in the land. Makes no sense.

I wrote a history of Watergate that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize last year. And let me tell you: When Nixon said “if the president does it, it’s not illegal,” no one believed that was true.

Here's a fun AI story: a security researcher noticed that large companies' AI-authored source-code repeatedly referenced a nonexistent library (an AI "hallucination"), so he created a (defanged) malicious library with that name and uploaded it. 1/

The expulsion of George Santos was made possible because a small community newspaper exposed his vile activities. Support local community newspapers. They are the backbone of journalism.

I'm something of a NYC nationalist—I really think it's a miracle that all the peoples of the world can live together in one city basically in peace and harmony—and this UES halal cart vendor story is only reinforcing that. documentedny.com/2023/11/22/…

"Biden is old" is a much easier story to write than "Biden spent weeks in delicate, behind-the-scenes negotiations to secure the release of hostages and a cease fire of hostilities" b/c the latter requires doing actual reporting and the former is just glorified opinion writing

My favorite part of this practice is the last question is “What are we doing wrong?”, followed by a prod similar to “No, really. Something is broken. What is the most broken thing you’ve seen?” Bugs get filed in substantially real time where appropriate.

Net-zero targets are all well and good. But how countries get there matters a lot. It's the area under the curve that matters for warming. Delay emissions cuts and you not only make net-zero less likely, you also make climate change worse along the way.

What Wikipedia did: we stood strong for our principles and fought to the Supreme Court of Turkey and won. This is what it means to treat freedom of expression as a principle rather than a slogan.
Replying to @mattyglesias
Did your brain fall out of your head, Yglesias? The choice is have Twitter throttled in its entirety or limit access to some tweets. Which one do you want?

Twitter used to routinely challenge Turkey’s takedown requests Erdogan actually had Twitter banned in Turkey in 2014 for refusing to comply. (the courts later ended the ban.) but that was on the “censorship” version of Twitter, not this new “free speech” one
In response to legal process and to ensure Twitter remains available to the people of Turkey, we have taken action to restrict access to some content in Turkey today.

Trump, while withholding aid to Ukraine, pushed Zelenskyy to investigate Biden. One of his mantras in 2016 was “lock her up.” In both of his previous bids for president, he encouraged legal action against the leading candidate of the rival party.
