My latest for @WDiminishment, in which I celebrate the vindication of parliamentary supremacy in my dear province. The discerning reader will detect more than a hint of Farthing's influence in my piece. Do give it a read, if you have a spare moment.
Kieran Wilson: Eby’s defeat is a victory for parliamentary supremacy "The outgoing premier’s contemptuous attitude toward the Legislature has been rebuked, and the principles of the Westminster system vindicated." withoutdiminishment.com/p/ki…

If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep.
"You need to wear a poppy to honour World War One" no I don't actually that was a dumbfuck war that nearly ripped our country apart with the Conscription Crisis and only anglo morons think that's a proud moment in Canadian history

When Don Cherry said "You people," he meant Jake Landau personally.
Regardless of who here is or isn't, I don't wear a poppy because I don't support all Canadian soldiers, lots of them fought for bad causes or are bad people! I support a strong military but it must be forged in a new ideological mould, one of humility.

I must nonetheless congratulate Jake on coming up with the most novel conspiracy theory I've seen in a while: that the poppy-wearing period keeps getting extended to enable a cadet-facilitated money grab on the part of the Legion: nitter.cf/JakeLandauTO/status/21…

They creep forward the start time every year so they can put the cadets out on street corners to sell more and more

Looks very cosy, but I can't help but think of this absolute banger of a book
The RAF Taylor Buoyancy Flying Suit is so great. Originally developed in 1942 for air gunners, it was made to keep the wearer afloat in water in case they were downed at sea. Made to be worn with heated gloves and booties. Would genuinely love to wear something like this in a more civilian form. The lapels and side cinches are great. Mr Doerkson just received a massive democratic mandate from the electorate. The will of MLAs and of the voters who returned them cannot be held hostage to the whims of what is essentially a private club. The idea that his premiership needs any more legitimation is untenable.
Replying to @junonewscom
No offense to @LDoerkson, but doing that to keep him in power is undemocratic. He needs a leadership review by the members to legitimize his premiership within 1 year IMO. Amending the party constitution to keep him in power is something 3rd world dictatorships do.

Of course, in a more fundamental sense, it matters not a whit in our system who the leader of the Conservative Party is. If Mr Doerkson can command the confidence of the House, he is premier regardless of who signs the papers at Tory HQ.

Just got home from a lovely Sunday walk, with the Strait of Georgia rumbling away on my left and the bigleaf maples blazing orange on my right. Can't beat autumn on the west coast.

Good Lord, the Gzowskis sure got about. IIRC, Count Casimir Gzowski was a pallbearer for Sir John A. Macdonald.
Funeral of Lt Roy Gzowski, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada; died of complications of typhus while the Regiment was visiting the UK in 1910; buried in #Aldershot #Hants. His great-nephew would become #CBC's famed host Peter Gzowski. #CanMilTwitter @CBC

One of the joyful struggles of parenthood is trying to keep a straight face while your 4-year-old tells you in solemn tones, almost through tears, about her bad dream in which she, Mr Badger, and Spongebob were trapped in a dark room.

Ireland should obviously be in blue here. The King of Ireland was killed by perfidious Englishmen in 1649 and the Irish maintained armies in the field for years thereafter to restore his son to the throne.

This is a crucial point. The people of Quebec did not have Confederation foisted upon them. They didn't even sign up for a pre-existing Confederation as my own province did. Rather, they were active and eager architects of the constitutional order of 1867.

Not sure why, but the suggestion from the local paper that I should call an emergency line if I have "bats in my spaces" sent me into fits of laughter this morning.

A sensible policy, and one that would help meet the School Regulation requirement that schools promote "loyalty to the Crown, [&] respect for Canadian traditions, laws, [&] institutions." Worth noting that Mr Eby's government extended this requirement to online schools in 2025.
reading the conservative platform and they want to β€œbring back the singing of o canada at the beginning of the school day”? i am 27 years old and never experienced that. from how long ago was this a thing and why does it need to be mandated

The School Regulation also mandates that school assemblies "include observation of occasions of historic or current importance to Canada and the Commonwealth, as well as appropriate references to the Canadian flag". Section 5 (11) and (12), for the interested.

Also worth noting that the School Reg. already requires all schools to fly the national and provincial flags while in session. If schools are failing to meet this requirement, a government would need to do no more than enforce the existing law.
