The actual feeling that you mistake for wanting to play wow, is missing some individual person you knew twenty years ago. The feeling is not some abstract "community" that the game supposedly enables, or the nuts and bolts of the gameplay itself. It is the specific real human relationship you had with a real specific human when you were 15 years old, who you only ever knew as a big horse person who shot magic spells, and who only ever knew you as an undead warrior with a vulgar slur as your name. You had a professional relationship and a friendship and that is what you are deluding yourself into thinking can be emulated or replicated, but no matter how good the dopamine hits or how good the new relationships are, it will never quite scratch that itch, because that was a real person and not a bunch of beeps and boops and bing bing wahoos, and no amount of those will ever be able to recreate that memory and relationship
