With next week’s elections coming up, here’s an idea for how Californians can help ensure accountability from Sacramento and the independence of our fiscal officers in future years

My interview of Lanhee Chen for my Hoover Institution 'Secrets of Statecraft' podcast, covering the realities of American, and especially Californian, politics: hoover.org/plus/research/can…
A failure of leadership, accountability, and innovative thinking. Shameful that this keeps happening in LA.

Anybody who has followed Malia Cohen's time in public life will find this unsurprising.
She refused to debate me when I ran against her for California State Controller in 2022.
Both as a candidate and as Controller, she avoids the unscripted exchanges with the media that we as voters deserve to see.
She has a record of meager accomplishment that makes her undeserving of another term in office.
Californians deserve better.
I want to be clear: I would have preferred not to make this video. I am sharing it to explain my upcoming coverage of the race for California state controller, including my efforts to interview incumbent Malia Cohen (D-CA) and why my candidate interview coverage of this office will feature only her challenger, Herb Morgan (R-CA).
I would have preferred to produce a piece giving both candidates equal time. Those are journalistic values that guide me every day. After weeks of outreach and back-and-forth with Cohen’s team, a Zoom interview was scheduled, then abruptly canceled by her team. I was told she had no availability to reschedule before the election.
Her team said I could submit written questions for Cohen to answer in writing. I respectfully declined because I wanted voters to hear directly from her on camera, with the opportunity for follow-up questions.
I told her team multiple times I wanted to ensure voters heard her side, her priorities, and answer why she deserves a second term in office. I made every effort to make that happen.
Fairness is always my priority. My goal was to give both candidates the same opportunity to discuss their records, answer meaningful and tough questions, and speak directly to voters. I regret that I could not make that happen, but voters deserve transparency about the process.

California is one of the most dynamic places on the planet.
But it is a case study in how a rich society can spend more and more while producing less and less of what its ordinary citizens need.
My take:
A significant indication of how much voters in LA are fed up with the status quo: the incumbent city attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto (whose time in office has been marred by controversy), is headed for defeat.
Danny Heil has been a co-author, collaborator, and colleague @HooverInst and will be a fantastic asset to new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh as he settles in to his work there.
New: Kevin Warsh has tapped two outside associates as advisers—in as temporary contractors for now.
Both are budget policy specialists, and one wrote the Fed chapter of Project 2025, which endorsed a radical restructuring of the central bank. wsj.com/economy/central-bank…
The WHO has been compromised for many years. Their role in doing the CCP's bidding during COVID is well documented. And, so, we shouldn't be blamed for our skepticism about how they handle outbreaks now.
Glad to see we're finally doing something about it.
JUST IN: Secretary of State Marco Rubio slams the World Health Organization for "miserably" failing during the COVID-19 pandemic and covering for China, warning that the U.S. is aggressively restricting travel to block a surging Ebola outbreak from reaching American soil.
"The World Health Organization has unfortunately not done well around the world. I think they failed miserably during COVID. They covered for China.”
“Our number one objective on Ebola, before anything else... has to be we can't have it affect the United States. We can't have Ebola cases coming here."

Congratulations to our next Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Kevin Warsh who was confirmed today by the U.S. Senate. I have known Kevin for most of his adult life. I first met him as a student in my international politics class at Stanford University, and it was clear even then that he was exceptional.
Kevin is uniquely suited to serve at this moment. He is battle-tested, principled, and brings the breadth of judgment this role demands. Just as important, he understands how deeply international relations and monetary policy are intertwined - a reality that will only grow more consequential in the years ahead.
He is the right person at the right time. On behalf of his friends and colleagues at the Hoover Institution, we wish him well.
Right on the heels of that disastrous Becerra interview, love the "rapid" in "rapid response" from the team here
What we're seeing is that Steyer and Porter both have ceilings to their support. That's why it's still a wide-open race.

Conservative health care policy expert @lanheechen warns policies that restrict drug prices could have unintended consequences.
"We need to have a system of drug pricing in America that doesn't interfere with what has been an incredible engine of innovation."

"If you are looking to have a significant surgical procedure, you're probably going to do it in America," says @lanheechen.
"Yet we have a health care system that produces unreasonably high rates of infant mortality."

A Taiwanese leader traveled to China on a Chinese airline. That's all you need to know about her point of view.
Amazing the manipulation that goes on with ballot designations in CA. Career politicians turn into a "voting rights attorney," "family care navigator," or "housing affordability advocate."
