If true, this is not a serious offer. Kurdish as an official language is a reality on the ground, not a concession. It’s been the primary language of public life for Kurds for 14 years. Damascus has neither the manpower nor the resources to reinstate Assad-era suppression.
My sources just confirmed that what @Charles_Lister said in his @ForeignPolicy essay about Sharaa offering to make Kurdish the second official language of Syria & to include Kurds in cabinet in his meeting with @MazloumAbdi But that’s pretty much the extent of it. Forget federalism, no local autonomy & SDF/YPG has to fold into the new national army individually not as a group.

Good news: I am INNOCENT over charges of entering Greece 'illegally', a court has found.
I was in 🇬🇷 BEFORE my ban from Schengen Zone was imposed, so it was absurd to charge me for breaching it!
Now to overturn this unjustifiable ban, imposed at Turkey's behest.

Following @MattBroomfield1's interrogation at Luton Airport, @fgeerdink explains why this is evidence of a worrying trend which threatens the ability of journalists to travel freely and to protect their sources.

I'm glad to be back reporting from Kurdish-led North and East Syria.
The new Syrian flag is flying. Assad's hated posters and statues have been torn down. But millions here face grave threats as Turkey attacks the region and pressures the new rulers in Damascus to follow suit:

My latest @thenation, with proposals for incoming US administration:
📌 Make Syrian sanctions relief contingent on dialog between HTS & Kurdish-led NES
📌 Leverage Magnitsky sanctions to permanently end Turkish attacks on US allies
📌Surge d-ISIS funding

Glad to see senior Syrian Kurdish politician and North and East Syria diplomatic head @ElhamAhmadSDC in the UK for talks.
By working with our anti-ISIS partners on the ground in NES, the UK can play a strong, positive role in guaranteeing a secure future for all Syrians:

The British public and government are dead set against any repatriations of jihadis from Syria. They’re wrong.

In this story I profile Connor, much-loved veteran of the fight against ISIS who committed suicide after returning to the USA from Kurdistan.
His mother Choony - quoted in the piece - has since died of cancer.

A decade on from their celebrated victories, foreign volunteers who helped the Kurds defeat ISIS are waging lonely battles against PTSD, suicide, and harassment by Western governments.
For @truthdig, I asked a dozen survivors how to prevent more deaths:

Replying to @clashreport
@clashreport : Our Minister has never declared that. This fake news was circulated by RT, a media that is prohibited in Europe for its disinformation operations.
France calls for an end of fighting in Northern Syria and a political solution that gives a role to our Kurdish partners of SDF, with whom we have fought ISIS, for the future of Syria.

The Turkish led SNA orders all units to arrest anyone within the ranks of the SNA who wishes to return home.
- This morning near Arimah (Manbij) the SNA at a checkpoint engaged a group of SNA fighters who laid down arms and wanted to return home
- SNA suffers from a shortage of fighters willing to fight the SDF (or fight at all)
- Many fighters especially their conscripts wish to return home
- SNA has increased salaries to counteract this development
- SNA (Sultan Murad) arrested 25 fighters who wished to return home from the Gire Spi (Tal Abyad) and Serekaniye regions
- 300+ SNA fighters in the same area have requested that the SDF opens a corridor for them to return home via the AANES after the SDF offered them this option (25 already arrested by SNA)

Shocked & disgusted to learn that Turkey has targeted and killed two Kurdish journalists in an airstrike in North and East Syria.
Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin worked courageously to expose Turkey's ongoing war on NES and flagrant violations of the supposed ceasefire. For shame.

#JihanBelki
Your bravery reporting the truth in the face of danger will never be forgotten. Since 2017, your work shed light on the struggles and resilience of Rojava.
Your name etched in the heart of Rojava, and your legacy will live on in the fight for justice and truth. RIP🌹
#Syria: Women Press Freedom is outraged by the Turkish drone strike that killed journalists #JihanBelki and #NazimDashdam near the Tishrin Dam, on the outskirts of Kobani. They were reporting on attacks on the dam when, according to local human rights groups, their vehicle was "directly" targeted. Their driver was also injured in the strike.
This tragedy comes amid escalating Turkish attacks in northern and eastern Syria. Jihan Belki is the third woman journalist killed by a Turkish drone strike this year, following the deaths of Gulistan Tara and Hêro Bahadîn in Iraq in August.
We strongly condemn this attack and demand an immediate, independent investigation to determine if these journalists were deliberately hit. Purposefully targeting the press in a conflict zone constitutes a war crime. Türkiye must be held accountable for the growing number of Kurdish journalists killed and injured by its drone strikes.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of Jihan and Nazim.

Turkish led SNA spotted with state of the art modern NATO hardware
Picture one shows a Turkish type KÜSS system; uses the United Kingdom made NATO Stanag 3733 optical laser system.
In combination with the laser guided system, the KÜSS uses 70 mm rockets to shoot at targets in the air and on the ground.
Second picture shows the Turkish modernised GZPT T1 APC a modernised version of the M113 US APC.
The Turkish led SNA and their leadership are on several terror lists - they have committed horrible atrocities across Syria and particularly against us Kurds.
They have violated the Geneva Convention countless of times and committed all sorts of crimes against humanity.
Don’t take my Kurdish word for it - go on their Wikipedia or the websites of dozens of NGOs who have dedicated themselves to document these crimes.
The list of their crimes is literally longer than the list of all their accumulated achievements in the Syrian conflict.
Turkey’s main argument against the SDF (YPG/J) is that they have become too powerful and thus pose a threat to the integrity of the *Turkish Sovereignty* - Turkey states that the few MRAPs, modernish rifles and combat capabilities of the YPG/J are of major concern to them.
The argument behind this is nonsense - the YPG/J does not possess anything that the other factions in Syria don’t posses.
International community is silent about the modern-NATO state of the art military equipment that the Turkish led SNA receives - and they do not confront the nonsense narrative of Turkey that the outdated equipment of the YPG/J pose a threat to the second largest military force in the NATO.
It’s bullshit honestly.
So what does Turkey actually fear? The entire border between Rojava and Turkey is secured by a thick concrete wall; with manned guard posts and heavy weapons stationed every few hundred metres.
The YPG/J couldn’t possibly push through that and as long as the YPG/J doesn’t figure out how to teleport, nothing will get through that wall.
What Turkey fears is that if they allow Kurds to live freely in Rojava - speak their own language and have schools that educate Kurds in Kurdish - Kurds in Bakure Kurdistan (northern Kurdistan; todays eastern Turkey) may demand the same rights.
The Turkish nation is fascist in nature - they are not a democracy and their beliefs are centered around Pan-Turkish-Nationalism *Turanism* - a social-Darwinistic ideology that beliefs that the Turkish *race* is a superior race and that all other races in Turan (a nation that stretches from the Balkans to China) must serve or cease to exist.
With Erdogan this belief was mixed with Islamist beliefs - Turanism still exists but the narrative has switched from a Pan-Turan state to a Turan-Caliphate state; leading the Islamic world (Ummah) and becoming the caliph much like the Ottoman Empire.
As always, these SNA mercenaries and Turkish nationalistic ideas are not a threat to Europe, NATO and the USA until it becomes a problem.
Instead of preventing this problem from becoming a problem - these nations are busy with appeasement efforts.
It wasn’t a problem in Cyprus - until the Turks occupied Cyprus.
It wasn’t a problem in Syria - until the Turks occupied over 15% of Syria
It wasn’t a problem in Armenia - until the Turks attacked Nagorno Karabakh and ethnically cleansed/Displaced over 100.000 thousands Armenians from lands they lived in for thousands of years.
It is not a problem in Greece - until one day Erdogan decides to let actions follow his rhetorics against Greece.
Right now Turkey is our problem - in the future it’ll become your problem.

Beyond disappointed to see @KurdishPeaceOrg speaking at an Israeli institution.
I have requested the removal of my 2022 piece from the Institute's website if @GiranOzcan participates in this event, and if the Institute does not publicly affirm support for Palestinian liberation.
Thrilled to be talking on an immensely important subject at this very timely event:
“The Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Moshe Dayan Center of Tel Aviv University are hosting a webinar with Dr. Nir Boms, the Research Fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University and Giran Ozcan, Executive Director of the Kurdish Peace Institute in Washington to discuss the situation and survival inspiration of minoritized communities and Israel's role in this context. Dr. Olga Kirschbaum- Shirazki will moderate this event.”
