I’ve basically been soft launching this for a while now, but I’m ready to share my first Big Kid working paper. Join me for a 🧵 on HBCUs, teachers, and Black student achievement! Comments and suggestions are much appreciated!

I am excited to be on the job market this year! Here is a quick thread on my JMP 👇 carolyntsao.com/
Carolyn Tsao's job market paper investigates whether public school teachers earn rents. Her novel approach to quantifying rents explicitly takes both pay and the value of non-wage amenities into account. carolyntsao.github.io/websit…

ALT Carolyn Tsao with her job market paper title “It’s Not (Just) About the Money: Pay and the Value of Working Conditions in Teaching,” areas of interest “Labor Economics, Personnel Economics, and Economics of Education,” and letter writers “Alexandre Mas (advisor), David Lee (advisor), and Ilyana Kuziemko.”
I suppose there are political lessons to be learned, hope remains through despair, etc., but fundamentally? This fucking sucks. Many will “survive” what’s to come, but many won’t, and that’s horrifying. I’m so sorry

One feature I love about this paper is Ian’s ability to distinguish ability among high achievers whose ability would be censored using conventional measures (e.g. SAT). His JMP provides new insight into the role of mentors in the production of talent. Take note, #econjobmarket

I have a new working paper posted today, which argues that U.S. local labor markets (LLMs) should be redefined. I present new LLMs which I argue (1) better match local planning areas, & (2) have higher average internal spillovers. research.upjohn.org/up_worki…
Idk, I’ve… read many of their papers and probably cited something sometime?
That committee needs to tighten up. With each passing year, it’s getting harder and harder to find a way to make this about me
(Y’all keep it up, tho)
So weird for there to be (yet another) qual vs. quant discourse when everyone knows your methods don't matter -- only the zip code of your university does

Blink and you’ll miss it, but I contributed to this article’s analysis of trends in university course content. It’s great to see the data I collected used to generate new knowledge.
Stay tuned for more work related to ideology and college courses w/ @GideonMoore and @SamuelThau
Republicans love to blame everything they consider wrong with America on an epidemic of wokeness, by which they tend to mean anything that smacks of political correctness.
In fact, woke views and practices have declined markedly since the early 2020s econ.st/3zf6s0Z👇

Cool to have @IRP_UW summarizing work that @rjx_louis, @just_shelter, and I published earlier this year in @SF_Journal about gentrification and eviction. I've used Focus on Poverty in the classroom, so it's neat to be included here.

One simple research trick they don’t often teach you: You really don’t have to write a paper using polygenic scores. Put it down — it’ll be ok

I welcome feedback on this project! If you even remotely imply I have done anything wrong, I *will* cry.
