Simple thought, but one way I find helpful to cut through the hype around agents is to think of them simply as a means of doing things we already do.
How effective or valuable they are ultimately depends on how much faster or more accurately they can do those things compared to the way we do them today.
Chargebacks were built around question of whether or not the cardholder made a purchase, yes or no.
Agents broke the binary. You did authorize the agent, you just didn’t authorize the $400 it just spent.
Payments is one part of the flow. Identity is another, but there's just so much more there.
September 1995, front of @USATODAY Money section: “Few Feel Safe Making On-Line Transactions.”
Only 5% of PC users trusted sending a card number over the internet. 57% trusted a payphone.
Swap “internet” for “AI agent” and you could run the same headline this week.
Time capsule.
A little bit about why I believe Agentic Commerce will continue to grow exponentially if we focus on solving the right problems in the space. I think we lived through something similar 25 years ago, and there's a lot we can learn from it.
AP2, ACP, UCP, TAP, Agent Pay, x402...
We now have many ways for an agent to pay and zero agreement on when it should.
A fully verified agent can still overspend, misread you, or get prompt-injected halfway through checkout.
Knowing who the agent is matters. Knowing if this action is what the human asked for is gold.
Very comprehensive post on where agentic commerce stands. Making a payment go through is one thing, but giving merchants and issuers a reason to trust the agent behind it is another.
This gap is crucial.

Make it happen @Delta @CopaAirlines @united @LATAMAirlinesUS there's over 20K registered Brazilians in the city only.
You can’t bundle KYC, KYB and KYA under one umbrella. You have to be laser-focused on one.
Btw, KYA is only the tip of the iceberg of agentic identity. Risk assessment, intent intelligence, and enabling banks, FIs and merchants to safely accept agents is a much harder problem than most companies realize.
Took a call this week with someone that pretended a lot they were interested, and during the call we started hearing print screen sounds. Honestly crazy that still happens. Not a fan of this type of behavior, shouldn't happen. Took down the screen the moment we heard it. Dirty playbook.

Last night we co-hosted a @NorwestVP, @beltichq and @raincards dinner focused on agentic commerce and agentic payments.
What a night! We had founders, investors and executives from @Visa , @Mastercard , @JPMChaseJobs , @AmexBusiness , @Shopify , @basistheory, @Adyen, @Meltwater, @CapitalOne, @sapiom, @Uber, @SHACK15sf , @Nevermined_ai and Hexagon.
A special shout out to the Norwest team, @jleites13, Amalia, Braden, thank you so much for making this happen! And also the Rain team, Sophia, Vijay, Finn and Kate Siragusa, this was a big one, thanks for co-hosting with us.
Really excited to be a part of these discussions and conversations that are shaping the industry. @lbcastll @Isha
We're partnering with @onkeiki to build a world where legitimate agents are recognized and accepted by merchants, instead of blocked.
Agents are already shopping, booking and buying on our behalf. The open question is trust: how does a merchant know the agent at the door is legit? That's what we're solving together.
Through this partnership, we're putting verified agent credentials to work in real commerce flows, so merchants can tell a trusted agent from a bad actor in milliseconds, and good agents never get caught in the fraud filters.
If you're a merchant looking to safely accept agents, come talk to us.
