Meet the Umani Boys’ Club!
Maktao, Kapei and Mwashoti are the three big bulls in our core Umani herd, and they like to stick together. Kapei is the resident mischief maker, while Maktao is his easygoing sidekick. Mwashoti is their team leader, mentor, peacekeeper and ambassador to the big girls in the herd. While most bulls become boisterous in adolescence, Mwashoti has always been unfailingly polite and conscientious.
Will Maktao and Kapei grow up to be ‘gentle uncles’ like Mwashoti? Only time will tell – but as the saying goes, with age comes wisdom, so there’s hope yet!

Just like human babies, newborn rhino calf Chamboi needed naps too.
He was rescued as a newborn in September 2023 – found alone by rangers near a waterhole in Tsavo West at barely a day old, his mother nowhere to be found. We brought him to Kaluku, so he could grow up and reintegrate back into the same ecosystem he was rescued from.
Fun fact: he used to squeak constantly for reassurance and comfort, but today - he's a teenager full of confidence, on a journey back to the wild!

Wonderful news: Murera has given birth to a baby girl this morning! Her daughter entered the world bathed in the light of a near-full moon, perfect in every way. We’ve named her Mwezi, which means moon in Swahili.
Murera chose to give birth in her stockade, the place that has been her nighttime sanctuary all these years. Her delivery couldn’t have been more seamless – in fact, by the time the Keepers heard the rumbles and rushed to her side, it was all over! Mother and baby are doing very well, while Mwana is already proving to be an excellent and attentive big sister.
More to come, but we're filled with joy and wanted to share Mwezi’s first moments with you. (Word is already out amongst the elephants – this morning, every wild-living Umani orphan showed up to meet the newest member of their family!)

I now have two sources close to Susie Wiles who claim that Trump is preparing a vast misinformation campaign for November 4th, built around conspiracy theories alleging widespread election fraud.
The plan? Declare victory regardless of the results, accuse Democratic officials of manufacturing ballots overnight, claim voting machines were secretly manipulated, and demand that Republican candidates refuse to concede.
In this scenario, the goal isn’t to prove fraud. It’s to convince millions of Americans that any election Republicans lose must have been stolen.

Dolores Huerta was a hero of mine.
When she co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962, people thought Dolores was crazy. “How are you going to organize farm workers,” she remembered being asked. "They are poor, powerless immigrants.” But that’s exactly what she did, helping thousands of migrant laborers working in brutal conditions make their voices heard, and demand something better.
Dolores spent the rest of her life fighting for marginalized communities, even as she herself faced sexism and abuse — including, as she revealed earlier this year, from Cesar Chavez and others within her own movement. She also came up with a pretty good slogan, “Si, se puede” — Yes, we can — that I too often get credit for. But as usual, Dolores got there first.
Michelle and I are thinking of Dolores’s family, the people whose lives she changed, and everyone who drew inspiration from her example.

Alarm bells rang when this cheetah was seen struggling with a limp. Cheetahs can reach speeds of up to 120 kph, so mobility can mean the difference between life and death.
Our Mara Mobile Vet Unit sprang into action, sedating the beautiful big cat to examine its limb safely and check for fractures, cuts or tissue damage. Fortunately it was only a sprain, so targeted anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relief were all it needed.
Cheetahs face threats from other big cats, people, prey loss and habitat loss. They need every helping hand they can get, including emergency treatments like this one, carried out in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.
