It’s an odd theory of victory that dictates signing a Russia sanctions bill, waiving its provisions, and then buying the same Russian energy products the bill aims to reduce. But perhaps victory - for Ukraine, survival, and for the U.S. resisting aggression - is not the aim? If the U.S. actively sides with the aggressor rather than victim, as at least sometimes seems the case, we will invite a more chaotic, dangerous world. This war is about more than Ukraine. The cardinal rule of international relations is a prohibition against wars of conquest. Russian success and Ukrainian failure would open the door to more, and we’ll all be worse off for it. Ukraine has endured, with our help, more than four years of existential pressure. It’s no time for turning.
