First time I've been to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and I'm genuinely surprised how handsome a city it is, it's lovely!

That a metro system would be built in a northern UK city involving underground tunnels and stations is supposedly an impossible, unrealistic idea from an unserious mind. Meanwhile, Newcastle with 13km of bored tunnels and 9 underground stations built 13 years after first plans:

Went to have a look tonight and good as it is, I could have been so much better if a south entrance had been created too!
*Sigh*. Newcastle’s Central Station was once promised a new southern entrance (see left pic) to open up access to a redeveloped Stephenson’s Quarter. After years of waiting we ended up with a small hole punched through a wall as a cheaper western entrance instead (right pic).

🚨New Video! Almost two years after the first class 555 metro train entered service, two years of using them as a regular passenger, I've pulled together a comprehensive, in-depth and balanced (as possible) user's review of these trains: youtu.be/a9jorsUY8cU?is=SAdy…

The trees on Northumberland St. and Ridley Place make such a difference, as do the planters/rain gardens. The lack of greenery in old StreetView images made the place look completely devoid of life and nature. 📍 Northumberland Street, #Newcastle.

Askew Road (east), former 4 lane congested traffic sewer. Let’s hope the progress in Gateshead over the last few years isn’t reversed, to the detriment of local residents, businesses & potential development. 🤞 📸 1st three photos from GMBC: instagram.com/p/DYuXND5CJyL/…

Of course the spare land at Heworth Interchange, (busy transport hub served by Metro, National Rail, and local buses), is destined for a DRIVE THRU coffee shop, instead of transit-oriented development (TOD). 🤦🏻‍♂️ What housing shortage?

Beautiful new bus station, but it appears to be lacking Calvert B for Bus branding, for an integrated, cohesive look with the rest of the region. Why is @DurhamCouncil still doing their own thing, @KiMcGuinness? ONE region, ONE cohesive public transport network.
Listen to Cllr Tim McGuinness as he speaks on the opening of the brand-new bus station in Bishop Auckland 👇
