I just watched In His Shoes on Sonia Uche TV, and this movie addressed something we don't talk about enough: what some men go through in their quest to provide for their families.
As much as we expect a man to provide for his family, it doesn't mean he should die trying to meet that responsibility.
I understand that Daniel stopped Imelda from working when things were going well, but when circumstances changed, wouldn't it have made sense for her to go out there and get something doing to keep body and soul together? Any woman with common sense would understand that this is the time to step in and support her husband.
I must also say that I love what Daniel did to Imelda. π Sometimes, people need to walk in another person's shoes to understand just how heavy the burden they're carrying really is.
It's easy to judge or take someone's sacrifices for granted when you're not the one carrying the weight. But when the tables turn, you begin to see things differently.
Here are my takeaways:
1. Men are human too.
Being the head of the home doesn't mean a man must always appear strong or pretend he has everything under control. Create an environment where your man can be vulnerable around you without feeling judged.
And when he does open up, don't use his vulnerability as an opportunity to downgrade him or look down on him. Be his safe space. Let him know he doesn't have to carry the weight of the world alone.
2. Women should not abandon their financial independence.
I will never understand why I have to quit my job simply because a man is providing. Even if my income is just β¦10, please, I would rather hold on to it.
Life happens, circumstances change, and sometimes the man who has been providing may need your support. No woman should have to start from scratch because she gave up her source of income.
Marriage should be about supporting each other, and sometimes that support comes financially.
3. Be mindful of the company you keep.
If you have a friend like Naima, who constantly invites you to events and activities she knows you cannot afford but is never available to support you when you're in need, perhaps it's time to reassess that friendship.
Not everyone who wants you around genuinely cares about your well-being.
4. Live within your means.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with living within your means. Don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself or your partner just to impress people.
At the end of the day, marriage is a partnership. Men need support too, women need financial independence, and both partners deserve a safe space to be human.
In His Shoes is definitely a reminder that providing for a family should never be a burden one person has to carry alone.
Have you watched it? What was your biggest takeaway? β€οΈ
