The work also references the deep connection the ancient Maya had with the sky. They were astronomers. For them, the sky was a calendar, a source of the divine, and a guide for life. Some of their buildings were aligned with celestial events, connecting religious practices with the practical need to track seasonal cycles for agriculture.

"People of the Sky" illustrates the awe and wonder I felt upon arriving at these ancient sites. I wanted to transmit the feeling of walking along a path through thick jungle and suddenly stumbling upon a three-story building that has stood there for centuries.

It’s difficult to put into words how it feels to experience these ruins in such an intimate setting. There were just twelve of us, deep in the jungle, walking around and inside the remains of buildings dating back well over a thousand years. These weren’t the typical giant pyramids you might imagine. They were ancient Maya towns, places where people lived. Standing alone in a room and imagining a Maya family sleeping and sharing meals there over a millennium ago was surreal. The fact that these were places of everyday life made the connection feel deeply personal, something easier to feel than to explain.

Back in April of 2026 I visited Mexico. The trip was organized by Maya Spirits, an organization that brings together artists once a year to explore a remote area of Mexico where Maya ruins are being uncovered deep in the jungle, and to meet the local communities who live nearby.

The 2nd edition of the @mayaspiritsnft Art Retreat, powered by @opensea.
A special movement of artists from around the world, coming together for one reason: impact.
A week immersed in the Mayan jungle. Learning from the culture, the people, the land, and the deep importance of protecting nature.
Each artist arrives with an open heart. They experience Mexico, connect with the communities, and then dedicate months to creating a unique art piece inspired by what they lived.
In return, the funding raised through these projects is directed toward empowering local women and children in rural communities, while helping us protect at least 100 hectares of land.
So far at @mayaspiritsnft we have conserved over 1,200 hectares of land, empowered more than 50 families, and helped change the lives of a group of children who are in urgent need of support.
Why do we do this?
To show the potential of technology, art, and human connection to make a real difference in the world.
We are just a channel.
Signal, not noise.
For the people who align with our values and want to express themselves in ways that are not common, we open the doors through contribution, vulnerability, and purpose.

It has taken 4 years to arrive here, and somehow it feels like we are only just getting started.

Still processing the past few days in the Mayan jungle of Mexico with such amazing artists and human beings.
Very grateful to @mayaspiritsnft for creating such a beautiful experience and bringing together an incredible group of artists and humans in such a special place.
Beyond the art, it was meaningful to see the support being given to local communities and families living near the Calakmul jungle. Experiences like this remind you how powerful creativity can be when it connects people in the real world.
Left inspired, grounded, and full of new thoughts.
