When I applied to Microsoft in 1992, I'd read that they received 100,000 resumes a year. I never did hear back. I'd been selling HyperCache for the Amiga to put myself through college, so I did what any reasonable person would do. I went through every customer registration card looking for any microsoft.com emails. Email was rare enough already (my first Microsoft business card would have a Telex number but not email). Only about 3 people had microsoft.com email addresses, so I cold-emailed each one. One fellow, Allistair Banks, wrote back. And the rest flowed from there. Without his reply, it never would have happened. We lost Allistair a couple of years ago. Until then, I emailed him every couple of years on my work anniversary to thank him, though! Much as Steve Jobs owes a debt to Bill Hewlett, I owe a big one to Allistair. And like Jobs, I've always found that if you ask someone for help genuinely, you quite often get it.

Deuteronomy 23:4: No Moabite is to enter the community of Adonai—even to the tenth generation none belonging to them is to enter the community of Adonai forever. Guess who was a Moabite? Ruth. Therefore, guess who has Moabite blood within him? Yeshua. God is a God of redemption.

The Cleveland Guardians are deeply saddened by the loss of Sam McDowell. The six-time All-Star spent 11 of his 15 MLB seasons in Cleveland, and in 2006 he was inducted into Cleveland’s hall of fame. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this time.

A woman addicted to painkillers for nine years said the only reason she ever opened a Bible was because a court-ordered rehab program required "spiritual reading time" as part of the schedule, and she needed to fill out the form either way. She started reading just to check a box. Genesis, then nothing for weeks, then she picked it back up almost by accident during a sleepless night in detox. Somewhere in the Psalms, something shifted. She stopped reading to satisfy the program and started reading because the words about despair sounded exactly like her own mind at 3 AM. By the time she reached the Gospels, she said it felt less like a book and more like someone sitting next to her in the dark. She's been clean for seven years now. Today she volunteers in hospice care, sitting with dying patients who have no one else — the same kind of presence she says she needed most and almost never had. She says God didn't wait for her to get clean first. He met her in detox.
