Anger at injustice must be channeled into constructive, nonviolent action. During our conversation about The Sins of Our Fathers at The King Center, I urged us to search our own hearts for ways our silence allows racism to continue. That responsibility includes me. Carry what you learn beyond a screening or a discussion. Speak up where you have been silent. Challenge racism in your own circles, and let your commitment to justice change how you live. #TheSinsOfOurFathers #TheKingCenter #Nonviolence365 #RacialJustice #BetterTogether

In a creative tribute to Sir Patrick Stewart, celebrated for his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center shared a compelling Hubble Space Telescope photograph. The image captures a complex galactic system known as NGC 7764A, which is located roughly 425 million light-years away in the constellation Phoenix. The tribute honored the actor's profound impact on space enthusiasts, quoting, “History will never forget the name Captain Picard. Thank you for inspiring the Next Generation of explorers.” The photograph details three distinct galaxies, where the two situated toward the upper right appear to be actively interacting. Gravitational attraction between the pair has severely distorted their shapes, pulling out long tidal streams of stars and gas. This precise structural layout, combined with our specific viewing angle from Earth, creates a striking coincidence that mirrors the silhouette of Star Trek's famous starship, the USS Enterprise. Beyond the visual alignment, the system illustrates the foundational mechanics driving galactic evolution. When galaxies experience close cosmic encounters, their gravitational fields exert uneven tidal forces upon one another. These forces stretch stellar material into extended plumes and fundamentally restructure the cosmic bodies. Additionally, the interaction compresses massive clouds of interstellar gas, which often triggers bursts of new star formation. Despite the term "collision," individual stars are exceedingly unlikely to physically collide because the vast distances separating them are immense, allowing the systems to reshape while the stars safely pass by each other. The role of the third galaxy, located toward the lower left, remains ambiguous, as astronomers have not yet conclusively established if it is gravitationally tied to the primary pair. Because these cosmic dances unfold over hundreds of millions of years, the Hubble image captures merely a momentary snapshot of an evolutionary process that will continue long past human lifetimes. Originally released by NASA and ESA in January 2022, the image stands as a lasting monument to an actor whose portrayal of curiosity, diplomacy, and exploration inspired generations to look toward the stars.

“Let my people vote.” Those words carry a history of courageous, nonviolent struggle for a voice in the decisions that shape our lives. We honor that struggle by participating and protecting access for others. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. If you haven’t voted, confirm your polling location and hours, review your ballot and make your plan. I’m asking you to help someone else participate, too. Offer a ride, share accurate voting information or check on a neighbor who needs support. Our democracy needs our voices, our votes and our continued work to ensure every eligible voter can be heard. #VotingRights #ElectionDay #Vote

As our founder, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, reminded us, every generation has a responsibility to answer the call to defend justice and advance the Beloved Community. May we continue this journey together with unwavering determination, compassion, and love, working toward a future worthy of the generations to come. #CorettaScottKing #MLK #TheKingCenter #BelovedCommunity #SocialJustice

On October 20, ConEd mechanic Koran Irvine was fatally shot by retired NYPD detective Victor Romero, who claimed the 46-year-old father was swerving into his lane, prompting him to discharge his weapon at Irvine's rear window amid moving traffic on George Washington Bridge - the world's busiest motor vehicle bridge. Romero drove home and returned to work the next day, where NYPD detectives asked him to voluntarily come in for questioning. One week following the tragic incident, a grand jury indicted Romero on second-degree murder charges - an upgrade from a manslaughter charge he previously received. He was granted bail and remains free. Status Coup's @jonfarina documents a rally by Irvine's family and friends in Lower Manhattan following Romero's indictment. Video by @blue_lanes

The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate among wealthy countries, and 80% of those deaths are preventable. And, it’s getting more, not less, dangerous to be pregnant and give birth in much of the country. I talked with @CTurlington of @everymomcounts and @AngelinaSpicer of Spicey Moms about the challenges facing mothers across the country, from access to maternity care to postpartum depression. Save the Date! When our founder, Coretta Scott King, established the King Holiday, she envisioned it as more than a day off. She envisioned a day of service and a renewed commitment to building the Beloved Community. We invite you to join us for the 2027 King Holiday Observance, featuring critical dialogues, youth empowerment programs, commemorative services, community service projects, actionable nonviolence training, and more. Stay tuned for additional details as we prepare to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy through service, education, and a commitment to nonviolence. #KingHoliday #MLK #TheKingCenter #BelovedCommunity #KHO27

Assault weapons are built for the battlefield and too often used to carry out mass shootings. Every state should have the authority to enact restrictions that protect communities, families, and schools. I have joined 19 attorneys general urging the U.S. Supreme Court to recognize that authority. Maryland successfully defended its own commonsense ban in federal court, and we are asking the Court to apply that same reasoning nationwide. Full press release: oag.maryland.gov/News/Pages/…

Dolores Huerta showed generations what people can do when they organize for a better future. A co-founder of the United Farm Workers, she fought for farmworkers’ dignity and gave the movement its rallying cry: ¡Sí, se puede! Her legacy lives on in everyone working to change the world.

The King Center mourns the loss of labor rights leader and activist, Dolores Huerta. Dolores co-founded the United Farm Workers, coined the anthem of hope “¡Sí, se puede!”, and spent more than seven decades organizing at the intersections of labor, civil rights, gender equality, and immigrant justice. She showed the world that field workers, women, and marginalized communities hold the collective power to demand dignity and win. Dolores Huerta and our founder, Coretta Scott King, shared an alliance rooted in the intersection of labor rights, racial equality, and women’s leadership. They organized together in Salinas, California, during the 1970 farmworker strikes, and stood shoulder to shoulder in Washington defending antipoverty initiatives. We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to her family, loved ones, and the generations of organizers whose paths were paved by her sacrifice. #DoloresHuerta #nonviolence #SiSePuede #TheKingCenter

Remembering Ruby Dee on her birthday with love and gratitude. An extraordinary artist and committed freedom fighter, Ruby used her voice to tell our stories, affirm our dignity and confront injustice. Daddy considered Ruby and her husband, Ossie Davis, close personal friends. They helped raise funds and public support for his work and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. May we honor her by using our voices, our talents and our influence to serve others and advance justice. #RubyDee #OssieDavis #MLK #CivilRights
