It’s time to find compassion for boys and men.
A shift in public perspective is overdue, and progress can accelerate if women—particularly those with liberal values—champion this cause, because the future isn’t female: The future is everyone.

In the UK, abused men and boys are classified as “Male victims of violence against women and girls.” I just can’t believe it. And, fyi, men are 41% of domestic abuse victims in the UK. Boys and men matter, too!
I’ve tried so many things to highlight the absurdity of how society neglects men and boys.
Infographics, filmmaking, personal testimony, podcasts, reels, written word, campaigns, protests, petitions, animations, poetry...
Each of these have had different levels of success, and largely feel underwhelming.
No matter what I create, it can never truly showcase what is going on.
And then, something is sent to my inbox, an official Government document no less, that captures the whacky landscape of men and boys issues better than anything I could ever hope to create.
This particular document was titled:
‘Supporting male victims of crimes considered violence against women and girls’.
Errr… male victims of violence against women and girls?!
It’s hauntingly perfect.
So let’s take a look at the damage such “gendering” of issues creates, who it harms, and how…

Imagine where humanity would be today if it weren’t for all the good men have done throughout history. Men are awesome!
The same people who want the “manosphere” treated as a public health emergency comparable to smoking have shown far less urgency about the fact that men account for the vast majority of suicides, have seen steady erosion in workforce participation, they’re the vast majority of overdoses, 94% of workplace deaths and their overall health has been deteriorating for decades.

Men call other men “boss.” The uber driver or the convenience store guy or hotel concierge. “What can I do for you boss?” Never heard a woman call another woman “boss” like that. Is it something women would like?
If we’re asking men to be allies to women, then women need to be allies to men as well. Allyship shouldn’t be a one-way street.
Address why so many young men are checking out in the first place and maybe the more controversial areas of this “manosphere” will stop looking so appealing.
It’s like these “experts” are making statements like this while rolling the cigarettes.

UN Women’s public messaging is so consistently one-sided, sexist and counterproductive that it borders on parody, but it’s not funny. And from conversations I’ve had with people inside the UN, it’s clear that a lot of staff quietly despise them as well and wish someone would rein it in.
Factor in how we just learned yesterday that 3 out of 4 𝘤𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 killed in conflict zones are boys and men, and it’s especially distasteful that they would even bring up “unpaid” domestic work. It truly is sickening. What is wrong with these people?

So true, UN, the real problem with men being maimed and killed in war is that women have to pick up their slack with the housework
Conflict places more of the care burden on women and girls' shoulders.
#Peace and security require more than their unpaid labor.
Women and girls must be at the heart of peacebuilding.

Men/boys are the large majority of combat deaths in conflicts — omitted. Boys also do care work — omitted. Saying women & girls must be “at the heart” of peacebuilding is prioritisation, not equality. Higher unpaid care ratios occur because men are dying or fighting.

Ban fraternities? A new report released today shows that campuses without them often report 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 sex offenses, not fewer 👀
I believe calling to abolish fraternities because of the bad actions of a few young men is not only lazy, but it also ignores all the positives that come out of them not only for the men, but for families and communities. Hopefully with more research like this, we can have a deeper, productive, logical discussion moving forward.

“It is true that men are more likely than women to act as wolves, predating on the vulnerable. It is also true that men are more likely to act as sheepdogs, keeping the vulnerable safe.” Thank god for brave men writes @Louise_m_perry

Well, asking for female-only spaces while demanding we abolish male-only spaces is hateful, but I don’t think that’s the angle here.
People say young men are “toxic.” I think it’s young women we need to take a hard, honest look at today.

We live in a sad world. Why don’t we 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 how awesome women are for being such amazing caregivers?
Men still die by suicide at rates 4x as high as women. We’re serious about changing that.
Is the UN? 👀
Women still do 2.5 times more unpaid care work than men.
We're serious about changing that. Are you? 👀
