Security researcher @log4j claims root shell access on a 2025 Samsung TV via zero days after reversing AES encrypted firmware, exposing always on hot mic, automatic content recognition, geo tracking, network mapping, targeted ads, DRM, and heavy user profiling telemetry.🤯

For certain uses, dumb tech is sufficient, or at least should be an option. Or smart but local/on your own network.

🎪🥖 Regarding bread n' circuses aka smart TVs they got ~80% cheaper for a reason. They spy on what you watch and sell the ads. @log4j hacked his new Samsung TV to find out why the ads felt so targeted. What he found is a privacy horror 👀 nitter.cf/log4j/status/211301414…

Buying a TV shouldn’t mean accepting a black box that collects data while you have little control over what’s happening behind the scenes. If it takes a root shell and serious reverse engineering to understand the privacy risks, ordinary users have almost no chance of checking for themselves. It’s a bigger reason to care about privacy by design. Liberdus takes a different approach to messaging with end-to-end encryption and username based accounts that don’t require a phone number or email. Users shouldn’t have to become security researchers just to protect their everyday conversations.

nitter.cf/log4j/status/211301414…

Smart TVs do not just play video. They fingerprint what is on screen (ACR) and can send viewing data home: programs, duration, device ID, IP. Samsung says so. Researchers measured the traffic. The simplest fix: treat the panel as a monitor. Stream from a box you trust, and keep the TV offline.
