SOUND ON! Huge thanks to whale-lover Sarah Garbett for graciously sharing her video from last weekend's encounter with ~40 Bigg's killer whales in the Strait of Georgia. The team at @sjiwhalewatch stopped their boat and lowered a hydrophone, capturing these stunning vocals!

Late Saturday, roughly 40 Bigg's killer whales assembled in the Strait of Georgia, making one of the largest *single* groups of Bigg's ever encountered in the Salish Sea. Here are a few photos from their high-energy happy hour taken by naturalist April Ryan of @sjiwhalewatch.

This is NOT an April Fools' joke! More than 70 Bigg's killer whales were spotted throughout the Salish Sea yesterday, setting a new single-day record. The largest group, seen by PWWA operators near the northern San Juan Islands, contained 18 individuals! pacificwhalewatchassociation…

Spring is here, which means more whales in the area and more boaters on the water. Remember, if you #seeablowgoslow, view whales from a safe distance, and look for the Whale Warning Flag.🐳 #pwwa vicnews.com/news/group-looks…

On this day in 2018 we witnessed the birth of Biggs orca T109A6 in the head of an Inlet in Clayoquot Sound. I later had the chance to name them - Riley - for a nearby cove in the Sound.

Construction is now underway to remove the Squamish Spit, which has cut off the Squamish River from the estuary for decades to the detriment of juvenile salmon. squamishchief.com/local-news…

Video clip of Grey whale in Haro Strait this afternoon. More video to follow. Thanks to @lostfrequency__ for help identifying it. NB It's the first Grey I have seen locally since Juanita frequented Haro over twenty years ago.

We saw the devastating results of flood infrastructure failure last week. Most flood control in BC does not meet current standards. We can and must #buildbackbetter to not only protect communities but also wild salmon. Learn more👇 watershedwatch.ca/tell-trude…

Too much salmon habitat is already blocked to #fishpassage. The wrong kind of flood infrastructure project will ADD to the problem. We're calling for flood infrastructure updates that are good for salmon and communities. Please send a letter & share 👇 watershedwatch.ca/tell-trude…

On our last night at Race Rocks, we were treated to a breathtaking show. We were surrounded by about 40 southern resident orcas - members of J and K pods on the west side. L pod members started in the east and travelled right past Great Race Rock and into the sunset!

This is worth the read! Orca Behavior Institute, along with leading killer whale experts and salmon conservation organizations, have released a statement about a recent publication which came to the conclusion that there is no salmon shortage in the Salish Sea
