Collating my work on trade security to pin this on Twitter. Check out the readings below! Thanks so much.
For Canadian businesses and consumers with deep connections to their Southern neighbours, I would amend the thesis that the victory would be when Canada becomes an economy that can choose how and where to do business, as coercion cannot underscore legal frameworks.

Will write more later, but it occurs to me that I missed an opportunity yesterday to explain the difference between rules based differentiation and, well, power politics.

A highlight of the opening day of the #WTOPublicForum was the launch of our 2026 World Trade Report entitled "A Critical Juncture for the World Trading System." The report was discussed by a first rate panel moderated by @wto Chief Economist Prof Bob Staiger and composed of Prof Pinelopi Goldberg of @Yale University, H.E. Amb @KumarIyerUK of the UK, Prof Mona Paulsen @loyaladvisor of @LSEnews, H.E. Amb Manuel Teehankee of the Philippines and Andrew Wilson, Deputy SG of the International Chamber of Commerce (@iccwbo). Click on this interesting report that speaks to the value of the @wto and the Global Trading System.

Ya’ll, the governments can do this with protocol agreements attached to the existing trade agreement that anchors the economies together.
Just look at the additional agreements the NZ and Aus have negotiated with Singapore on essential supplies.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is pursuing a major shift toward Europe after trade relations with the U.S. deteriorated.
His government is exploring an “associate member” relationship with the EU—short of full membership—that could deepen cooperation on energy, critical minerals, AI, defense, research, and trade.
The plan aims to reduce Canada’s dependence on the U.S. by creating stronger economic and strategic links with Europe.
Ideas include easier movement of goods and workers, shared infrastructure, joint technology projects, and closer defense ties.

On what evidence of investigation does the POTUS base the decision to ban certain Canadian products under Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act? This administration has a legal duty to comply with the statute that confers its trade powers.

Fascinating real time example of the distinction between rules of control (or the perception) and rules of origin.

I don’t buy into the inevitability of LLMs. However, I do think we need to think more carefully about what the (ab)use of LLMs tells us — how it shines a light on other problems. Why do some academics see fundamental elements of their research as burdens? Have they always?
We hope this public discussion will help us think creatively and carefully about how the MFN principle and its exceptions can continue to serve the entire membership in pursuing mutually advantageous trade. Let’s clear the air and talk about MFN at this year's #WTOPublicForum

Just to build on Erica's point here. Thus far, what we have seen is the United States negotiating *directly* with businesses. Ad hoc. Opaque. And makes it impossible for a trading partner government to address the concerns giving rise to the tariffs (especially if under 301s).

Republicans have been attacking socialism/the DSA, but at the same time they are invoking a broad notion of "security" to justify government ownership of the means of production. It's not clear what limits there are to this security-based socialism, which undermines these attacks

1) state of existing infrastructure. Purification, refinement, transport.
2) political risks and insurance for operating in Venezuela.
