After being on many scientists’ shortlists for years, the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has recognized optogenetics — a technology that allows researchers to control the brain’s neurons with pulses of light go.nature.com/4jo5dRN

Can you remember your last 200 tweets from this year?
A professor published 200+ papers and as many as 14 books this year. I'll leave it there. gift link wapo.st/4d3vD7n

Google DeepMind CEO Sir Demis Hassabis: “Today’s systems, are nowhere near [AGI]. Doesn’t matter how many Erdős problems you solve… I think it’s far, far from what a true invention or someone like a Ramanujan would have been able to do”.

Why should we expect an LLM to "jump" (do abduction) by itself? Abduction requires a neurosymbolic approach: philpapers.org/rec/GARARI-15

AI tools are very useful for mathematical research. But at present, producing good work requires a labor intensive step that I have been calling "deslopping" - making the thing readable. Please do not skip this step; even if the theorem is great an unreadable paper is worthless.

Happy Birthday, John Hennessy! Hennessy received the 2017 #ACMTuringAward with David Patterson for pioneering a systematic, quantitative approach to the design and evaluation of computer architectures with enduring impact on the microprocessor industry. Together, Hennessy and Patterson co-developed Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) architecture, a breakthrough that enhanced computing performance and continues to deliver significant benefits in efficiency and power consumption. 🔗 amturing.acm.org/award_winne…

Since when did developers care about software correctness? If they do now, it’s the mother of all Pauline conversions.

A whole new generation of LLM-generated Ph.D. applicant emails is in my inbox this morning. For the love of god, if you are going to forfeit your voice, please don't cede it to Claude. I would never hire Claude

On building neurosymbolic agents: foundations.
Replying to @luislamb
In our book we synthesize several examples and testbeds on how to build neurosymbolic agents, which are needed today if we want to build robust agentic AI, ie agents equipped with a semantic understanding of their environments. link.springer.com/book/10.10…

I don't fear superintelligence. I said this at @TEDTalks a decade ago, and I stand by that point of view today. Among other things, any so-called super intelligence that could be an existential threat to humanity would also have to be super-embodied. And that's not going to happen. ted.com/speakers/grady_booch
