TLDR: mutual emotional, physical, mental dependence? probably enmeshed. at least one party enables the others self destructive behaviour? probably codependent.

enmeshment is NOT healthy either but I think it’s more common in shipping and usually isn’t a tragic aspect just an issue the couple (hi davekat) needs to work through. codependency is inherently toxic for both parties and the shipping appeal would be in that toxicity

Karkat is really great at codependency. I think he and Eridan also have that vibe going… base HS Karkat loves to try to fix people without actually pushing them to improve so he just kind of enables them and makes himself suffer to varying degrees of intensity

You can be both codependent and enmeshed at once but i think davekat is more of the latter. Imo a codependent homestuck pairing is gamkar where karkat sacrifices his own stability to “help” Gamzee while they’re moirails but actually just enables him to never heal

codependency is a dynamic where one person enables another’s self destructive behaviours often at the cost of their own wellness. it’s more self sacrificial than malicious.. it’s, in the end, an attempt to fix the other persons problems

enmeshment is basically when you have little to no boundaries with eachother which ends up having your identities meld together and make you dependent on eachother. i think people hear Codependent and think Co-dependent, like they are both dependent on the other
