Super proud to have collabroated on this #chi2025 paper which studied how users of AI companion apps actively re-align AI's values for various purposes. The strategies users used and their rationales behind were quite interesting and inspiring, especially for human-AI interaction
AI alignment is often top-down, with technical teams setting broad safeguards. But what if users had more agency? Our CHI'25 paper introduces "user-driven value alignment" -- where users actively re-align AI to reflect their values. #chi2025

In (dis)honor of the Supreme Court upholding the TikTok ban, resharing my paper with @elenamaris1 and @HibbyThach on mutual aid practices on TikTok. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.…
The loss of this platform *is* a major loss of freedom of association and expression for TikTok users.
I'm thrilled to share that another paper on Virtual YouTuber (VTuber) was conditionally accepted at #CHI2025. Led by @KenjenLee and in collab. with @AllenPiao, we explored how fans respond to the "termination"/graduation of a VTuber, through the lens of parasocial grieving. 1/2
It is truly offensive and disheartening. There’s still a long way to go for the broader computing research communities to be truly inclusive.
1/3 Today, an anecdote shared by an invited speaker at #NeurIPS2024 left many Chinese scholars, myself included, feeling uncomfortable. As a community, I believe we should take a moment to reflect on why such remarks in public discourse can be offensive and harmful.

Fun fact: Fairfax, where GMU is located, is ranked the #2 healthiest college town in the US (brokescholar.com/americas-he…). According to the report, Fairfax residents report the fewest days of mental health distress than anywhere else.
