@dodo Meet Wings. Wings can soar like the wind but can't sit on a perch or walk normally. Wings has to pull himself around everywhere he goes by his beak because his legs are straight out to his sides. It is one of the things that bothers me the most in raising birds. Babies dying. Mothers killing babies for some unknown reason...maybe accidental but the result is the same and it hurts. Then you see a sweet bird like Wings. My first instinct was to ask someone braver than me to kill him and put him out of his misery. After all, it is just a bird. But then I thought of my crippled son David. What if people started thinking that way about humans. They already do about babies in the womb. If they test them and something is wrong, they give them an abortion. Euthanasia is already legal in two states in America so what is the next step. However, I decided to give this baby bird a name and a chance. So I put him in a cage. Still , he seemed lonely. So when another bird hatched three babies and they flew out of the nest, I put them in with him, one at a time. Of course, they stayed on the perch for the most part, but they talked their bird language back and forth. But something changed when the last baby got put in. I noticed her jumping down to the floor and spending a good deal of time with Wings. She was all yellow and fluffy like butter so I named her Buttercup. With her prodding she encouraged Wings to start feeding out of the feeding bowls instead of the floor and to drink water without sitting in the bowl. Yesterday, her sister joined her on the floor with Wings and with their encouragement, Wings climbed all the way to a toy with a mirror and beads and a flat roost to sit on. I was overjoyed. Their brother still, for the most part ignored all this and stayed on his perch, uninvolved. I started thinking about that and how once again these birds are reminding me of humans. Here's the little crippled bird and these two sister's got involved in helping and are changing this cripple bird's life. Yet, you got the brother who refuses to get off his perch and do anything but make noise. It is ashame, but humans and even Christians don't help like they should. I love what my good friend Betty Rambo put in her status yesterday when she quoted Gal. 5:14-15, "For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: "Love thy neighbor as yourself!" It seems to fit here somehow. The birds showed me an example of God's love. But they weren't finished. Tonight, the most amazing thing happened as I went to put the birds to bed. Wings has been sleeping alone on the bottom of the cage floor because he can't sit on a perch. However, as I prepared to cover the cage, there was Wings with Buttercup and her sister all curled in a ball in the corner of the bottom of the cage sleeping. I couldn't stand it. I broke down in tears. All I could do was hear God's Word in my ears. (NIV) "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And the very hairs on your head are numbered. So don't be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows." Oh how I love my Jesus. That he could give comfort and solace to a crippled bird and love me that much more. This is a message to all those who are in need or going through a trial. God says he loves us more than the birds. That the very hairs on our head are numbered. God keeps teaching me through these sweet little birds and I praise Him for it. I hope it encourages you as much as it did me. Be blessed. Footnote: Wings has had a good life for a crippled bird of such magnitude. He has had two mates. He lost the first one and currently has the sweetest one with a crippled wing of her own. They are the most loving couple. God has someone for everyone.
