The more DSA grows from liberals joining, the more important political education and member standards are going to become. Anyone is welcome to join and learn, but talented organizers will not stay if half of DSA are liberals who won’t commit to basic socialist principles.

Right now, Cuba needs our solidarity, not attacks from so-called progressives. It’s our duty to end the blockade, end the sanctions, and stop our own government’s war on Cuba.
this is more of the same. we don’t want to know what nithya thinks “working class angelenos” should do, we want to know what she, the future mayor of LA, supports *as a matter of policy*. it’s great she’ll support people’s right to protest, but divestment is policy not a protest.

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman sent the following statement to DSA-LA explaining her position on BDS, which in turn was shared with DSA's National Political Committee:
Over the last couple of years, I have come to believe strongly that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza, and I have felt deeply uncomfortable with US tax dollars funding this atrocity.
In November 2023, I was the first councilmember to recognize the lives lost in Palestine by adjourning a council meeting in honor of those killed in Gaza. Several months later, I called for an investigation into LAPD's violent response to the encampments and protests at USC and UCLA, noting that it is "incumbent upon the City to be transparent and accountable to Angelenos about how their safety and civil rights are being protected, and for that protection to be equally provided regardless of one's politics, identity and protected free speech."
And in June 2024, I co-authored the Los Angeles ceasefire resolution to ask that "the City joins the call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional return of all hostages, and the safe and immediate passage of unhindered humanitarian aid and medical care to Gaza; and ... that the City will not tolerate any form of harmful and racist language, especially antisemitic, anti-Palestinian, and Islamophobic hate speech toward anyone; and ... that the City supports peaceful diplomacy and an end to the conflict that honors all peoples' right to dignity, safety, and justice."
I believe the best way for working Angelenos to stand in solidarity with Gaza is through non-violent protest, legislative action, and diplomatic pressure, including BDS. As mayor, I will continue to protect the right of all people to engage in peaceful protests and would continue to oppose any policy or city legislation imposing penalties on the constitutional right to protest against or criticize any nation. Generations of Angelenos do not want their tax dollars to go toward endless wars when they are struggling to make rent, find housing, afford healthcare, and find stable work.
“Socialists don’t trade blood for crumbs.”
Ahmed, as always, being the clearest moral actor on DSA’s NPC.
“is it not objectively worse for dsa-la to continue endorsing an expelled mayor?”
save me david jenkins 🙏🏻
Is L.A. mayoral candidate Nithya Raman a capitalist?
"I'm a capitalist and I'm also a Democratic Socialist...we need to make sure capitalism works without harm to workers... to poor people."
She says the DSA is a "big tent" but she disagrees with members who call to abolish police, prisons and the Senate.

As a reminder Bowman, you called the principled organizers asking you to not supply the genociders with bombs psyops at the time. I'm glad you shifted, but this is not personal. Nithya can commit to BDS as you did, and the organization has a duty to uphold its line.
This is the same argument liberals made about socialists opposing Kamala Harris. Incredibly tired rhetoric. Go vote blue no matter who, have fun.

To abstain would be to let Bass win, so how does it functionally differ from a Bass endorsement?

I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it.
I’ll take @ellalangleymsic over Kacey Musgraves any day.
And if I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico.
many people who would benefit from a just transition do not want to transition. framing policing as a solely economist problem ignores the deeply entrenched legacy culture of policing. cops are ideological workers. this is a step away from saying we should reform police unions.
idk why the dsa right always has to get their panties in a bunch when the left is critical of their darling electeds. y’all should know by now that there will always need to be a leftward pole for anything to happen. we need each other most of the time just be chill.

A majority of the NPC, including SMC, GW, and BnR, voted against enforcing R22 in invalidating DSA-LA’s endorsement of two-time Democrats for Israel endorsee Nithya Raman. SOR believes in the authority of R22, and rejects the NPC decision. 1/2
I think of Shaban al Dalu whenever the flame on my parents’ stove gets too big, or when friends gather around a bonfire, or when there’s a bright warm light coming towards me in the wretched dark of the highway.
I see every Palestinian I have watched suffer in the past three years of this genocide in the most mundane moments of life, because every moment has happened on top of an ever present grief.
