Observer paperback of the Week today is Kitty Mrosovsky’s Quake. She died 40 years ago, the novel, frank, flawed & brilliant on sex and death, was turned down by publishers, now it comes out to accolades. I wrote an essay for the Foreword observer.co.uk/culture/books…

June 1927 Virginia Woolf on a full eclipse (London's today was a partial eclipse though spectacular) 'We had our smoked glasses...it became darker & darker as at the beginning of a violent storm...there was no colour. The earth was dead.'

We watched the eclipse on the beach with pal. Seagulls went quiet, breeze blew chill, light reddened. Last time was in Willesden’s Roundwood Park, also wonderful, but better this time without notebooks, just living on this planet under these skies

Well done Rod, making a mini-row even after you died! Gadflies of every colour & culture make us think about what we believe. ❤️
Replying to @catwrote @LiddleRod
I don’t mind if anyone is provocative. Sure, it’s v boring if they’re politicians, but he wasn’t. I only met him once, on the Kent London line, & found he was interested in Neanderthals like me - wanted to write a book. Now he won’t.

Alas @LiddleRod . Loved his mad, brilliant & wicked humour, & his brains. Occasionally I felt he was drumming the beat of the right wing organs that paid him but mostly he was just creatively, disrespectfully, gorgeously funny. Ohhh
