Jeremy Sochan with the most humble and thoughtful response to his last 10 months or so, from NBA Champion (Knicks) to a standard G-League contract (Texas Legends).
- Drafted 9th overall by the Spurs in 2022, Sochan was a focal point of their early rebuild.
- 2025–26 season, his role diminished significantly as San Antonio restructured their entire rotation around Victor Wembanyama.
- 2026 Trade Deadline, the Spurs officially waived him, making him a free agent.
- February 13, 2026: Sochan clears waivers and signs a rest-of-season veteran minimum contract with the New York Knicks.
- June 14, 2026: In a poetic twist, the Knicks face Sochan's former team, the San Antonio Spurs, in the 2026 NBA Finals. The Knicks win the series 4–1. Sochan plays in the closing seconds of Game 5 to officially win an NBA Championship.
- Off-season (2026): The Knicks decline to retain him and he is a free agent once again.
- August 2, 2026: Sochan signs a one-year, non-guaranteed training camp contract with the Portland Trail Blazers.
- October 17, 2026: Despite his solid preseason tape, Portland waives Sochan just ahead of opening night.
- October 24, 2026: He enters the G League player pool and is selected No. 1 overall in the 2026 NBA G League Draft by the Texas Legends
His response:
“I think the way I grew up, my family, my parents; it’s always been like that. I could look at it negatively (the Portland situation). But when I look back at that situation, I think the two months I was there, I grew a lot. I was healthy throughout the whole training camp, preseason and open gym.
So I think that was a blessing.
When we got into preseason games, the minutes I got I think I used them to the best of my ability. I had good games.
So what would be the point of being negative and angry for getting waived?
Of course, you can look at it as that’s the NBA and I have a contract. But at the same time I have good momentum. So, why would I hold weight on something that I can’t control?
And instead, be in this moment and do what I can do and keep that momentum going.”
He shared during the Texas Legends media day, that this opportunity with the G-League could be the biggest blessing of his career.
My dad and i used to sit with newspapers with his ijgb friends discussing us elections all evening and morning. Rip to him and them.
