Why India while firming up the trade deal with US, must not hurry its implementation steps. 'Entry into force' clause now holds the key as Trump buffets his way through domestic political turbulence, armed with the Graham legislation to impose tariffs at will on countries like India with high Russia oil trade. As per new guidelines promulgated this year, entities that have been named in a First Information Report (FIR) by the CBI or other central investigative agencies face a suspension of business dealings, with the Secretary of the department authorised to take action as soon as information on the issue is received. As per the guidelines, the period of suspension could be six months, which can be extended by the Secretary concerned. In case it is established that corrupt practices were undertaken by the company or a formal chargesheet is filed by CBI, the company will face stricter action of debarment by the defence ministry.
Defence Ministry is likely to suspend business dealings with pulp packaging to drones manufacturer SMPP after bribery charge. Latest guidelines from April this year mandate suspension of business dealings if a company is named in a CBI FIR. Initially for a period of 6 months, which can be extended. More stringent provision of debarment will get triggered if chargesheet is filed. @ETPolitics m.economictimes.com/news/ind…

SMPP corruption case: The order of suspension of business dealings with the defence ministry can also be extended to all of the company’s allied firms. In case the company’s joint ventures or consortiums are suspended, all partners may also be deemed to be suspended.

SMPP - the first defence company of its size caught in a corruption scandal in over a decade - is no stranger to controversies. In 2019, ET brought out how it sourced key components and raw material for bullet proof jackets supplied to the Indian Army from China. This was after it used western sourced materials during qualification trials. m.economictimes.com/news/def…

What's at stake in the ongoing public row over the CEC is how will the Commission discharge its core function of conducting polls from here on. Because seeds of doubt have been sown on 3 critical fronts: EC-voter dynamic; EC-political parties’ relationship; and uncertainty within the EC system on the way forward. Why BRICS is an exercise in realpolitik. It serves many purposes for India, from managing boundary confrontations with China, providing cover for other conversations to becoming leverage and, at times, strategic insurance in an eroding and uncertain world order. For China, this is a show of power. And, therefore, for India, a leverage on China, and the role of the one country that can tip the balance either way. My column #StateofPlay BRICS realpolitik: How India-China tensions get defused, strategic leverage grows economictimes.indiatimes.com…
