The Ramp was ours! Installed in 1948 to help Nanjo Singh escape the fans it was still a big part of the action in our era. NWA champion Ric Flair & Harley Race use it to the utmost in this bout in April 1982. Our most popular story on the site is...'The Ramp' mapleleafwrestling.blogspot.…
As we work on our next book ...Our 2019 book covering the history of the Canadian Heavyweight Title is now available in full COLOUR! At an Amazon near you. amazon.ca/Canadian-Heavyweig…
The legendary Greg 'the Hammer' Valentine hitting the steps to the ramp at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1982. Valentine a huge part of the era here in Toronto and one of the greatest of all time. Big bouts vs Backlund, Flair, Steamboat, Wahoo, Dewey, Bravo, Piper, and many more. Always an exciting bout with the Hammer!🙏Happy Sunday -AC
It's so much fun looking back at my era again! A cool note is that WWF champion Bob Backlund was part of an early dream team with our Canadian champion Dino Bravo. They faced AWA Tag champions Pat Patterson and Ray Stevens in a spirited bout at MLG in November 1978. Four champs! Backlund & Bravo teamed again in Oshawa in July 1979 vs Greg Valentine and Ken Patera, Bravo's last appearance before being stripped of his title..New book in 2027 🙏

Happy Halloween!🎃October 31 1982. Our first Halloween card since 1971. That had Sheik vs Tiger Jeet Singh with over 15,000 fans. This one not so busy with WWF champion Bob Backlund in his first of two vs Playboy Buddy Rose. Backlund made seven defenses in 1982, vs Snuka (2x), Orton Jr., Valentine (2x), & Rose (2x). The finale vs Rose marked Backlund's last appearance during the NWA days....

Photo I took at Maple Leaf Gardens in March 1982. Blackjack Mulligan vs John Studd in a bloody Texas Bunkhouse match. In Toronto the lights went down during the bouts and had a unique feel but was not great for amateur photogs. At the end of the bouts the lights would come on full blast and sometimes we had no idea what happened. Dq? count out? foreign object? interference? Announcer Norm Kimber would soon fill us all in. Good times! - AC
A minute later I got this shot of Papa & son. Mulligan Sr would rank high on a list of 'most blood spilled' during the Mid Atlantic era. HIs long running feud vs Big John Studd responsible for most of it....
It's Saturday TV wrestling day! Today Big John Studd vs Blackjack Mulligan Sr. After Sr. wins the bout Studd delivers a beatdown and Blackjack Jr. comes to the rescue! Studd runs for his life down the ramp and in this capture tries to save face 'let me at em' before being chased off again. I am somewhere in the mob to the right of the ramp. 😀

Enjoying the Leafs so far, could be our year! 😁 Hang in there. Reminds me of this bit about tough Fred Atkins, wrestler, manager, trainer, liason to Japan, referee, and fitness instructor for the Sabres & then the Leafs in the 70s/80s.. As told by a reporter shadowing Leafs defenceman Ian Turnbull.🍁
