Today I opened a hospital letter next to the bins because I couldn’t bring myself to carry it inside. I got home today after cycling back from Bessacarr: sun on my arms, wind in my face, endorphins buzzing like I’d outrun something. Then I saw the envelope in the postbox. It was much heavier than normal. The kind of weight that makes your stomach turn before you even open it. I opened it by the wheelie bins. Couldn’t quite bring myself to carry it through the door. The report was 5 pages long, that’s how many tests I have & do regularly (amazing NHS), it was filled with the language I’ve come to know too well. Malignancy. Lesion. Further investigation. Again and again, like it was trying to pin something down that can’t be pinned. Seeing those words written down on official letterheaded paper always takes my breath away. Another separate stack of paper requesting blood tests, more scans. More waiting. Another reminder that even when I’m living my life, I’m still being hunted from the inside. This is the part I don’t always say out loud: It does make me… anxious. Not all the time. But enough. I live with this constant hum of uncertainty that eggs on urgency, like something is ticking just beneath the surface. I never really feel “well” & and I never feel like I have enough time. Not for rest. Not for joy. Not for the kind of life I imagined I’d grow into. And some days, that pressure builds. It has been recently as I feel a bit lost. Generally. Rerouting a life that constantly has no stability in it. Then I get my medical updates that can knock the breath out of me. I try to stay present. I try to believe that medical science will stay one step ahead of whatever is happening inside my body. But sometimes, it’s hard to hold all that. And yet. Today I rode home in the sun. Today I felt strong. Today I opened the letter. And today, even with fear at my heels - I’m still here. Still trying. Still hoping. Still burning through whatever time I’ve got like it matters. Because it does. I have some time, and we will make all of it count.

I made this video for this song as a celebration of survival - a joyful reconnection with with self, with going back home, & with the world after illness & going through some bad shizzle over the election campaign. It’s about healing. About stepping into the light after walking through deep vulnerability. Speaking of vulnerability, I tried to just talk this but it demands to be sung - but not a “singer” & I had to sing it quietly, because the walls are paper thin here & everyone went to bed early. but it needed to be let it out anyway. This is for anyone who’s ever had to begin again.
This is what it sounds like to live. To see the beauty in the world with the dark & light.
