Carl Sagan explains, the ancient Greek scholar Eratosthenes noticed a brilliant geometric inconsistency in ancient Egypt. At the exact same moment, a stick in the city of Syene cast absolutely no shadow, while another stick miles away in Alexandria cast a very clear, substantial one.
