I do think the AI extinction risk stuff is fake hype just not for the reasons everyone else does. The tech companies are really building powerful machines, that part is real, but they want everyone talking in far-off science fiction terms to avoid questions of near term liability

You have a system for automation that behaves in increasingly complicated ways and you have institutions putting increasingly important areas of life in its hands. There’s an obvious potential for damage (with unclear responsibility) short of Skynet overthrowing humanity.

I’ve seen an idea that AI is all fake vaporware and the companies are trying to inflate their importance to get a government bailout

I think it’s completely pointless to try and guess their motives. The fact we should all focus on is that they are lying.

Definitely. We are being told to fear the robot apocalypse to ignore the actual harm being done right now — from palantir developing surveillance systems to Claude bombing Iranian school girls. And of course none of these safety proposals consider labor at all.

You're far from alone! @HeidyKhlaaf and @theayubinator both come to mind as thoughtful voices you might find resonant.

If you gave most people trillions they’d come up with something to be fair
