509 years ago today (according to the traditional story), Luther challenged a Pope. The resultant cause and effect didn’t start a new church, it reformed the one true catholic church. As Calvin says in his letter to Cardinal Sadoleto:
"[N]ot only that our agreement with antiquity is far closer than yours, but that all we have attempted has been to renew that ancient form of the Church… Indeed, in attacking, breaking down, and destroying your kingdom, we are armed not only with the energy of the Divine Word, but with the aid of the holy Fathers also."
Orthodox, but not Eastern, catholic, but not Roman.

New book. Releasing September 2026.
I poured my heart into it, more than anything I’ve ever written.
It’s a brief, popular-level case that Christianity can explain both the world around us and the deep ache within us. Think Mere Christianity, with an emotional twist, tailored toward Gen Z.
Please pray it draws people toward the enchanting wonder of the gospel.

An acquaintance with church history often leads people to Rome, but an extensive knowledge of church history leads them away. In episode 5 of Defending the Reformation, @DrJordanBCooper, @gavinortlund, and @MichaelHorton_ discuss the visibility of the church.
He's right. When you look into things, this is very evident. "Why Protestants Win the Church History Debate" (@gavinortlund ) youtube.com/watch?v=m01G7fsa…

This might the heart of the difference in what Protestant and Catholics teach about salvation.
Contrary to what this priest (I assume that’s what he is) says, in Romans 10 Paul says “the word of faith is near you, in your mouth and your heart.” Not as near as your nearest sacrament dispenser, but literally as near, Paul says, as your own mouth and your heart are to you. “For if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:8-10).
Contrary to this priest’s analogy, grace is not an heavenly substance dispensed in “medicinal-like capsules” from a priest like a doctor gives out medicine. God’s grace is his declaring us righteous because of our faith in the finished work of Christ (Romans 4:5). Literally, Paul says, faith is “counted as” righteousness. God’s grace is not a substance; it is himself as he unites himself to us, making us righteous and alive in him as he puts his Spirit into us (Gal 2:20).
And how are we united to him? By faith (Gal 3:1-3). “O foolish Galatians! Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith?”
Having been justified by faith and filled with the Spirit by faith, connecting to the church—and hearing the word preached, participating in the ordinances, etc—these don’t bestow additional grace, but are means by which God stimulates the outworking of the Spirit he’s put into us. God is his own best gift. God himself is the gift of the gospel.
I’m not trying to pick on this priest, but clarity on the gospel is crucial. It is everything.

Our first day in heaven we will able to say, "this is the best day of my life." But then we can say the same thing the next day, and every subsequent day. Our joy will be full, but ever-expanding. Happy thought.

Protestants are sometimes charged with having no historical basis for their view of the canon.
Here I respond by walking through Jerome and various other patristic testimonies. Not only does the Protestant canon have precedent, but it is found in some of the earliest voices.
A very good and helpful video by Gavin Ortlund. Kind and gracious as well, as always.
Here is a brief explanation of why Protestants reject the Roman Catholic sacrament of penance.
