In the face of a centuries-old system of degradation based on skin color, the Enslaved of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) and Louisiana revolted in 1791 and 1811, two decades apart.
Even though two centuries have passed, and slavery is thankfully no longer a reality, numerous revolutions are still essential to transform mindsets.
This is the true essence of the exhibition: "Haiti-Louisiana: Tides of Freedom," which I am curating.

Représenter Haïti dépasse le football.
C’est porter une histoire, une identité, une culture et les espoirs de tout un peuple. C’est mesurer le privilège de défendre ses couleurs et la responsabilité qui l’accompagne.
Je porte ce maillot avec une immense fierté. Une fierté profonde, sincère, qui n’a besoin de s’opposer à personne pour exister.
Le football nous apprend justement cela : défendre passionnément ce qui nous appartient tout en respectant profondément ce que les autres défendent.
Pendant 90 minutes, il y a des couleurs, des rivalités, des émotions et cette volonté absolue de gagner.
Après, il reste l’essentiel : le respect que l’on se porte et ce que le sport est capable de créer entre les peuples.
Nos différences font la beauté du football.
Notre capacité à nous retrouver autour de lui en fait la grandeur.
Je suis fier d’Haïti.
Fier de notre peuple.
Fier de porter nos couleurs.
Et si le football peut nous opposer pendant 90 minutes sur le terrain, sa plus grande force est de nous rassembler en dehors.

Today has been, to say the least, a difficult day @MiamiHerald & across @mcclatchy. Yes, I’m safe FOR NOW to all who’ve been inquiring & I haven’t had time to answer. But so many of my colleagues, great journalists at this paper, across the chain and elsewhere, are not. They’ve lost their jobs & suddenly life as they knew it is looking a lot more uncertain. When we say support local journalism, when we, especially me, chastise you for copying and pasting stories, it’s because of moments like these. You will not always agree with our reporting or the angles we focus on, and most of us don’t get paid enough for either the job or the abuse we endure from readers (some real & others imaginary) but we are dedicated to keeping readers informed, giving voice to those who are often overlooked and dismissed and holding the powerful accountable. Do we always get it right? No. But if we aren’t doing it, guess what? To borrow from the phrase coined by my former boss while at that other paper- democracy dies in the dark. #Supportlocaljournalism
