Thanks to a multitude of penalties, SHC was forced to punt. But on the first play of the West Boca drive, Abe Mayo makes the diving INT! What a game for the DB!! @EraPrep @SJCGridiron

I spent ten years as an assistant principal—some of the hardest and most rewarding years of my career. And if there’s ever a month that highlights just how critical that role is… it’s April. Testing season. Packed activity calendars. Rising energy levels across the building. It’s a lot. And right in the middle of it all are assistant principals—steady, present, and essential. Teachers experience the daily wins of the classroom—the moments that remind them why they teach. Principals often stand in the spotlight, representing the school and celebrating its success. But assistant principals? They work behind the scenes. They take on the work others can’t—or won’t: Discipline and difficult conversations Parent meetings Scheduling issues and last-minute coverage The countless logistics that keep a school running They are problem-solvers in constant motion. They are the ones who: Support a teacher dealing with challenging behavior Step in when a student is being bullied Cover a class when no substitute shows up Listen to frustrated teachers with patience and empathy Make sure a child without lunch still gets to eat Stay late for the student who missed the bus Stand beside teachers in tough parent conferences Walk the halls, creating calm through their presence The work isn’t glamorous. It often goes unnoticed. And too often, it’s taken for granted. But it matters. Assistant principals are the reason schools hold together when things get hard. They do whatever it takes so teachers can teach and students can learn. I see it. I appreciate it. And I hope they know the difference they make. Because they don’t just support the work… They make the work possible. Assistant principals are the backbone of our schools—true unsung heroes. #APWeek #AssistantPrincipalWeek

Creating a positive culture and climate for every scholar starts before instruction ever begins. It starts at the door. One of the most intentional and impactful moves we can make as educators is how we greet scholars as they enter our classrooms each day. In Ruthless Equity, Ken Williams @unfoldthesoul emphasizes the importance of setting the learning environment at the classroom door. Drawing on research by Dr. Clayton Cook, the Positive Greetings at the Door protocol highlights how simple, consistent actions can significantly impact student engagement and behavior. The protocol includes five key steps: Be Present Be visible and fully present by standing or sitting at your classroom door as scholars arrive. Connect Greet each scholar by name using a verbal or nonverbal greeting such as a wave, fist bump, high five, or handshake. Allow students to choose what feels comfortable for them. Check In Ask scholars how their day is going and offer positive pre corrective statements to reinforce expectations and set them up for success. Support Provide private encouragement to scholars who may have struggled with behavior the previous day. Each day is a fresh start. Praise Give behavior specific praise to reinforce positive actions and choices. Research shows that consistently implementing this practice can lead to a 20 percent increase in academic engagement and a 9 percent decrease in disruptive behaviors. When scholars feel seen, valued, and welcomed, we can gain up to an extra hour of academic engagement each day. This is how culture is built. This is how climate is shaped. This is how we ensure every scholar feels valued the moment they walk through our doors.

Principal visibility matters. Period. A head coach would never try to coach a football or basketball game from the locker room. Coaches have to be on the sidelines watching the field of play, reading the game, adjusting strategy, and inspiring along the way. School leadership is no different. If principals want to impact learning, we must be visible instructional leaders in classrooms. Not to evaluate. Not to micromanage. But to understand instruction, support teachers, and keep the big picture lens at 30,000 feet. Viviane Robinson’s work on instructional leadership found that leaders who actively participate in and promote teacher learning have nearly three times the impact on student outcomes compared to leaders who focus primarily on organizational management. Her message is simple. The most powerful leadership move is being present in the core work of teaching and learning. “The more leaders focus their relationships, their work, and their learning on the core business of teaching and learning, the greater their influence on student outcomes.” Visibility is not about compliance walks or checklists. It is about credibility, trust, and shared ownership of learning. Teachers deserve leaders who know their reality, understand their challenges, and can coach from the sidelines with clarity and purpose. If we want stronger instruction, higher engagement, and better outcomes for students, leaders must be out and about, in classrooms, supporting teachers, and leading learning where it actually happens. That is instructional leadership.
