There's a corner shop on Jamaica Rd, just by Mill St in Bermondsey, in London. When I lived there, I got far too much food from that shop. It was cheap and comforting, though rarely healthy. I wasn't the only one. Everyone from all walks of life would stop in—there were few other options nearby. That included the recently knighted Patrick Stewart.
I don't know where in the neighborhood he lived, but I did see him crossing the St Saviour's Dock footbridge a few times when I was walking home from work or out on the weekend, often with a little plastic bag from Costcutter. One time I smiled at him and he smiled back. I wish all these years later I had known then how much his performances as Jean-Luc Picard, Charles Xavier, Gurney Halleck, among others, would have had such a profound effect on me.
I didn't get into Star Trek until recently. I used to watch parts of The Next Generation, DS9, and Voyager when I was home sick growing up. But they were fragmented, out of context; they just seemed like random curiosities and marginally enticing fantasies. Over the last couple years, I've watched every episode of Star Trek in order when I have spare time. I'm currently halfway through Voyager.
If I'd seen Sir Patrick at that Costcutter now, I would've told him that he represents a vision of humanity that I hope we can one day achieve—however flawed. I'd tell him he's become my favorite captain.
But he probably heard that every day from some annoying randoms, because he was that special. So it's probably for the best I just left him to his groceries.
what a truly amazing person Patrick Stewart was

Just last month, DoorDash couldn’t seem to find the money to pay their deliveristas — until our administration forced them to give back $131M+ in stolen wages and penalties.
This week, they’ve managed to find $17 billion to acquire one of their main competitors.
Corporate consolidation means higher prices, harsher exploitation, and greater economic inequality for New Yorkers.
We’ve stood up to these giants before. That doesn’t stop now.
BREAKING: DoorDash just agreed to buy Instacart for $17 billion. Here's what that means for customers and shoppers. apnews.com/article/doordash-…
I don’t get it. Tracked a run on my Fitbit Air. Ran til the @googlehealth app said 3.1 miles, treadmill read slightly more. But when the activity uploads to @Strava, it decides I ran farther in much less time?
Tried exporting as a .tcx and uploading; same issue. So strange
There are a ton of extremely smart people at @ElevenLabs, and I got to pick a few of their brains recently.
I wanted to know how a transcript knows exactly where every single letter is spoken. Turns out the answer is Cue, and it’s pretty wild:

Some uses of AI give people pause, but giving people back their voice isn't one of them
Legitimately inspired by the work our Impact team does every day, preserving the voices of people whose illness has taken their ability to speak

Aníbal, an engineer and professor, is losing his voice to ALS. With ElevenLabs, he’s recreated it so he can keep teaching.
We’re partnering with @AsociacionELA, Spain’s leading ALS association, to give people with ALS across Spain free access to our voice restoration technology.
starting to wonder if I've just happened to see every single post about an iPhone Duo that's broken or if I should start thinking about canceling my order that's still weeks out from shipping
this isn't helping

It took about five minutes for Jesse Dalton’s iPhone Duo dream to shift into nightmare mode.
He had only opened and closed the Duo four or five times when the hinge got stuck at a 45-degree angle. Dalton tried to pry it open and heard a loud pop.

sometimes I'm concurrently amazed at:
- my complete inability to spell
- google's ability to know what i meant
- everyone else's inability to spell that means google knows what i meant
This is so wild
Every voice agent has to hear a customer over a TV, a barking dog, or the grandstands at a grand prix.
We wanted to try something even louder, so we borrowed @audif1_’s wind tunnel.
Sorry about the noise, @HulkHulkenberg.
I have extremely distinct and fond memories of coming home from school and finishing my homework in time to watch The Simpsons on Sky One while being incepted every single day to order @Dominos_UK
what a time
