The basic thing about this is that if you are cooking for a family, for almost anything you might decide to cook, someone is going to be a dick about it. If you don't care about that, it's not a problem. If you do care about it, it wears after the first few hundred nights.
Why is this such a difficult thing for women? Nearly, every woman I know (except Mom, who still has a rigid schedule for each night) struggles to think dinner. Not actually MAKE dinner, but think of what to make and this is an incredibly stressful thing for them.

I, unfortunately, still care about it, and so there has been much blood, sweat, and tears spilt in quest for the Food No One Is Going To Be A Dick About. It is, I fear, a quixotic enterprise.

To be fair, once in a while I do find a meal that everybody likes, and that's pretty exciting, and then I get to make it one more time, and after that someone's going to be a dick about it for some fucking reason.

the thing about going on "vacation" with children is they don't understand the concept of relaxing

A thread of assorted thoughts about the masculine experience:
A lot of men believe (with some justification) that a woman's willingness to accept something she doesn't like goes up rapidly with the amount of effort she's invested in the relationship. So they try to put off revealing things they think will be negatives.

It's true that this is an incorrect usage historically, but I think "metrosexual" in OP's sense serves a useful function for people whose understanding of male heterosexuality is extremely rural-homeowner-coded. Like he's not *actually* gay, but he doesn't own any truck at all.

Thread on cultural miscellany is four years old, time to start anew:
My thread of tweets on culture has grown unwieldy, so I'm starting a new one.

I'm going to be a little bit generous to boomers and suggest that some of this is a larger phenomenon where the media environment of the last couple decades allows people's most selfish, short-sighted impulses to be broadcast, get traction, and become normalized.

I have a theory that the stress cost of street folks is not about their actual volume or content, but about their unpredictability. Even if a street preacher is annoying, you feel like you know what his deal is, whereas the dude having a psychotic break could do anything.

I feel like The Dharma Bums is a really useful text, completely aside from its own literary virtues, as an account of how mid-20th-century Californians were even capable of engaging with Eastern practices.

SF can be your home, it can be your friend, it can be your lover, but if you want to be part of it you are like the high priest standing in awe before the elder god you just summoned who is 100% going to eat you and not think twice about it.

Ok, not trying to yell at Teno is particular here but this drives me up the wall. Thought experiments (and polls) like this are *bad*. They confuse more than they elucidate anything and they get people talking at cross purposes. I hate them. The problem is that everyone's answers hinge on underspecified assumptions that sneak in when trying to parse an *incoherent* situation. This isn't a breakfast problem objection. I'm not refusing the hypothetical for reasons of mon comprehension or for failure to understand what a hypothetical is. The problem is that these Omega or Oracle-relative hypotheticals *are worse than nonsense*. Oracle-relative proofs work in computational complexity because it is formalized math. Oracle-relative questions about moral intuitions or anything else are guaranteed to smugle extra assumptions in each readers mind, and so are actively detrimental to thought and discourse. The problem is there is no universe that is exactly like this one except that it contains a limited-scope Omega that just tells you this one bit of extra information. No such coherent construct exists. Other changes *must* come along for the ride, but they are not specified. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it.
someone commits a genuinely harmful but minor crime, usually punished by 5 years in prison, and u solely are responsible for their sentencing. omega floats down from the sky and tells u with perfect certainty that they will never reoffend. you sentence them to:
33%five years
38%less than five years
24%zero years
4%more than five years (??)

You know, it's interesting that I have almost no mental image of what the late 40s were like. Probably I just have everything I know filed under the 50s, but in a lot of ways we just don't talk much about the immediate post-WWII period.

I just had an insight about what the fuck is up with SF lately that had not occurred to me previously precisely because I have lived in the Bay all my life, and it's this: I think people are getting messed up because they are coming to the area wanting to be *part* of SF.

This is not a gatekeeping thing, you just need to maintain a respectful distance from the indigenous egregores or they will kill your soul.

One implication of this is that FOMO is San Francisco's natural mood: if you *don't* feel like amazing things are happening just outside of your field of view, something has gone wrong for you.

Honestly if you could find a place with a compelling vision of the status quo, that would genuinely be something pretty special
i am looking to join a low-velocity team that knows when to stop interating. i would relish the opportunity to work on problems that have already been solved, at a place with a compelling vision of the status quo. if you're building something nice-to-have, let's connect

every video game will be that one game that you fucking loved but no one else has played and looks at you blankly when you try to talk about how the cutscene after the third boss fight is the cornerstone of your life philosophy and you just feel so fucking alone sometimes

in the future, every poster will have their own extremely distressing incident that turns out to be, if you are familiar with multiple years-long inside jokes, only moderately distressing.
