What happens when photography is pushed so far that reality begins to fall apart? In Unwashed Bystanders, Frank Manzano transforms strangers photographed from a distance on the streets of Chicago into strange, almost unrecognizable figures that, ironically, evoke the aesthetics of early AI imagery. The project becomes a metaphor for one medium succumbing to another, making all the more palpable the blurred reality we live in, where fact and fiction become indistinguishable.
