Debunking the Phantom Debts and Ecological Loan Fallacy My attention has been drawn to trending claims by the Anambra State Government that my administration left behind inherited debts, including a ₦2 billion ecological loan, contractor liabilities, and unpaid salaries, gratuities, and pensions. This is completely false. We systematically liquidated historical gratuities and arrears dating back several years, amounting to over ₦35 billion. At the point of handover, the state owed nothing in salaries, gratuities, or pensions, nor did we owe anything to any contractor for projects duly executed and certified. The ₦2 billion ecological fund in question was released barely three months before the end of my tenure for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis. Despite pressure to spend the money, I refused, insisting that it should be left for my successor because government is a continuum and the funds were tied to a specific project. The money was therefore left 100 per cent intact in First Bank, in Account No. 2018779464, with a balance of over ₦2.13 billion. It is important to stress that funds tied to specific projects or set aside for particular purposes were not even included in the over ₦75 billion in savings we left behind. If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning. -PO

This Is Ridiculous!!!😱 A sitting president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should not have his name on a US District Court order forfeiting $460,000 as proceeds of narcotics trafficking. Whatever legal label is put on it - civil forfeiture, in rem_ proceeding, settlement without admission, The fact remains; In 1993, the United States government traced funds in accounts held by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a Chicago heroin ring. The affidavit of IRS Special Agent Kevin Moss laid it out. The court in the Northern District of Illinois, in Case No. 93 C 4483, ordered $460,000 forfeited. That is not speculation. That is a certified court record. We are told it was only against the funds, not the person. We are told there was no criminal conviction. We are told the FBI in 2003 found no arrest record. These are technicalities that may satisfy a courtroom but they do not satisfy the moral standard required for the presidency. The presidency is not just a legal office. It is a moral office. It represents Nigeria🇳🇬 to the world. It is the commander-in-chief of the war against drug trafficking and money laundering that is destroying our youth. How can the same office be occupied by a man whose funds were once legally determined to be the proceeds of heroin? FOIA redactions under Exemptions 6, 7(C), 7(D) and 7(E) will not erase that history. Glomar defenses and attorney-client privileges will not clean it. The 399 pages the FBI and DEA have produced are already enough to tell us what happened. Nigeria deserves better. A country of over 230 million people cannot afford to have its president explain away a drug-money forfeiture in every international capital. It is ridiculous, it is embarrassing, and it lowers the standard for everyone who comes after. He should have remained the godfather and strengthen our democracy from the background. I’m sure he understands what being a 360degree Leader means 👌 but NO, this is what “Emi lo kun” is costing Nigeria.
STATEHOUSE STATEMENT CLARIFICATION ON THE ONGOING FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT CASE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. The Presidency has noted recent speculative reports concerning an ongoing Freedom of Information Act case before the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. For clarity, the matter is a civil records-disclosure dispute under the United States Freedom of Information Act. It is not a criminal case against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, nor has the court found him guilty of any criminal wrongdoing. Here is the background to the case, which comes 23 years after the American Consulate in Lagos, in a letter dated February 4, 2003, informed the then Inspector General of Police, Mr Tafa Balogun, that an FBI records check found no criminal arrest records, wants, or warrants for then Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In 2022, Mr Aaron Greenspan, who is known to work with Nigerian opposition figures including David Hundeyin and Atiku Abubakar, submitted FOIA requests to several United States government agencies seeking records relating to President Tinubu. After the agencies withheld certain records or declined to confirm or deny their existence, Mr Greenspan commenced Civil Action No. 23-1816 before the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in 2023. The court subsequently permitted President Tinubu to participate in the proceedings as an intervenor. During the proceedings, the Defendants asserted the "Glomar defence, a standard defence that US law enforcement agencies invoke from time to time. It simply means the government agency is not "in a position to deny or admit" the existence of an investigation. It protects government personnel and the techniques and sources law enforcement agencies use to investigate and prosecute crimes. Based on the invocation of this defence, the United States District Court granted summary judgment in favour of the CIA, EOUSA, Department of State, Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It ruled that they be removed from the proceedings, leaving aspects of the claims involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration for further consideration. In compliance with the court’s orders, the FBI and DEA produced 399 pages of records, with portions redacted under exemptions provided by United States law. The Plaintiff challenged the FBI and DEA's decisions to redact portions of the documents produced. The FBI and DEA, through the United States Department of Justice (USDoJ), pushed back against the Plaintiff's requests. The FBI and DEA rejected the application to produce the documents without redactions for the following reasons: 1. Some of the documents are protected from being revealed to the public by law, for example, Grand Jury proceedings. The law exempts transcripts of Grand Jury proceedings from public disclosure. The Pen Register Act also protects from disclosure information about certain court order(s) authorising or approving the installation and use of a pen register or trap and trace device. (FOIA Exemption 3) 2. Some of the documents fall squarely within the attorney-work product and attorney-client privileges. Some documents contain instances where FBI and DEA agents sought and/or received legal advice from USDoJ attorneys. (FOIA Exemption 5) 3. Some of the documents were prepared for law enforcement purposes. (FOIA Exemption 5) 4. Some of the documents contain information which, if revealed, could lead to an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy. (FOIA Exemptions 6 and 7(C)). 5. Some of the documents, if disclosed, will reveal the identities of confidential sources or compromise the techniques that law enforcement agencies use in investigating crimes. (FOIA Exemptions 7(D) and 7(E)) President Bola Tinubu, on advice of his lawyers, has also asserted his rights as guaranteed by FOIA Exemption 7(C). The Plaintiff has until September 11, 2026, to file any opposition and reply to the Defendants' and Intervener's processes, while the FBI, DEA and the Intervenor have until September 18, 2026, to respond to the processes that the Plaintiff might have filed. The release or withholding of records under FOIA does not, by itself, establish criminal liability. The case concerns access to government records and the proper application of statutory exemptions. The Nigerian media should note that this case is exclusively within the control of Judge Beryl A. Howell of the United States District Court. She will determine its outcome, based on the evidence, applicable law, and the parties' arguments, not the wishful preference of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar or his agent, Mr Von Batten. Recent public commentary by Mr Karl von Batten has inaccurately portrayed him and his client as central to the proceedings. Neither is a party to the case. The litigation is a civil records-disclosure dispute under FOIA. It does not constitute a criminal charge, trial, or judicial finding against President Tinubu. The FBI and DEA have produced records with redactions, and the remaining question is whether those redactions are lawful. The United States District Court will decide that issue based on the filings and applicable US law, not political commentary. The Presidency therefore urges the media and the public to distinguish verified court proceedings from partisan speculation. 65 FREE SURGERIES FOR 65 CHILDREN Yesterday, I attended the final follow-up clinic and appreciation programme at Mother Mary Hospital, Isolo, Lagos, following the successful completion of 65 free surgeries for children to mark my 65th birthday. I am deeply grateful to God Almighty for guiding the medical team throughout the process and for granting all 65 children safe and successful surgeries. The surgeries, led by Dr Folaseye Adebayo and her dedicated team, included adenotonsillectomy. This procedure removes enlarged or chronically infected tonsils and adenoids, which can cause breathing difficulties, recurrent infections, and sleep-related problems in children. What made the occasion particularly touching was listening to parents share their testimonies and hearing how these procedures have improved their children’s health and quality of life. My profound appreciation goes to @DrFolaseye Adebayo and her entire team, the hospital management, the parents, and everyone who contributed to making this initiative possible. For me, birthdays are not merely occasions for celebration. They are opportunities to give back, touch lives, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I thank God for the privilege of being part of this initiative and, most importantly, for the gift of 65 healthy and hopeful children. May God continue to bless all those who dedicate their lives to saving and improving the lives of others. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO

A President and the Endless Question of His Past As a citizen of no other country, who has never sought foreign citizenship even when doing so became fashionable, my loyalty to Nigeria and my faith in her destiny remain unshaken. Yesterday, 30th of August, being Sunday, I fervently prayed for our nation and for those entrusted with the solemn responsibility of leadership. I found myself deeply saddened by the direction in which our country is heading. It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest. Leadership, in my humble view, demands the courage and humility to confront one’s history — to acknowledge mistakes, provide candid explanations where questions arise, and, where necessary, apologise and seek forgiveness. True authority is strengthened, not diminished, when a leader accepts responsibility rather than seeks to shield uncomfortable aspects of the past from legitimate scrutiny. This becomes particularly important when questions concern educational credentials. Issues surrounding foundational schooling — primary and secondary — should not remain unresolved or be addressed primarily through legal proceedings. Nigerians deserve clear, credible, and verifiable explanations, especially when such had been submitted in the past. My deepest concern is the example this sets for more than 200 million Nigerians, particularly the over 30 million young people in schools. The nation’s highest office should exemplify integrity, accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership. An imperfect past is part of the human condition. What matters is the willingness to confront it with humility, honesty and deep apology, to make amends where necessary and, when circumstances so demand, to place the interests of the nation above personal ambition. When will our political class fully appreciate that individual ambitions are temporary, while the nation endures? The Presidency is an office held for a season; the moral standards established by those who occupy it can influence generations. Nigeria is greater than any one person, and the integrity of the Republic must always come before the interests of the individual. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO

The US uses strict, explicit statutes to prohibit the practice of favoritism toward family members #NEPOTISM. The Postal Revenue and Federal Salary Act of 1967 - Often called the Federal Anti-Nepotism Statute, 5 U.S.C. explicitly prevents a public official (including the #President and Members of Congress) from appointing, employing, or promoting any "relative" to a civilian position in an agency they oversee. The Definition of "Relative": The statute broadly defines relatives to include parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, first cousins, and in-laws. Although The "White House" Loophole; Legal precedent has shown limitations. In 2017, the Department of Justice ruled that the White House Office is technically not an "agency" under the strict wording of the law. Therefore, this allowed Donald Trump to legally appoint his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and daughter, Ivanka Trump, to official, unpaid senior advisory roles. Government Contracts Under federal conflict-of-interest laws (such as 18 U.S.C. § 208), it is a CRIMINAL offence for an executive branch employee to participate personally and substantially in a government matter, including ✅Awarding a contract—if they know that they, their spouse, or their minor child has a financial interest in that matter. Violating this can lead to severe fines and criminal prosecution. Contrastingly, in Nigeria 🇳🇬 the government and its citizens sees it as an opportunity to enrich themselves and family members 😭. @PeterObi is NOT your regular politician!!! 🥳 HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Celebrating My Eldest Brother at 75 Today, 30th August 2026, I celebrate my eldest brother, Dominic Ositadimma Obi, who turns 75. I celebrate him not merely because he is my elder brother or because of his age, but because he is an exemplary human being. When I was Governor of Anambra State for eight years, he never came to my office or the Governor’s Lodge for a day seeking favours, as many might have expected. He is a planner and contractor who builds homes for people, yet not once did he ask me for a government contract. Whenever we met, he would warmly embrace me and tell me that he was fine. He would then solemnly remind me to keep doing what I promised the people and never bring a bad name to the family and my community. He would tell me that whatever difficulties he was going through, many others were worse off, and that I should do my best for society. I later came to understand that this was not peculiar to him alone. My family members had actually held a meeting and resolved that none of them would take advantage of my position as Governor. They decided that whatever good name I was building for the Obi family and Agulu must be protected. The same principle extended to my children. Today, at 75, my beloved brother remains deeply concerned about Nigeria. Whenever we speak, he is full of prayers and good wishes. He constantly reminds me that if I have the opportunity to serve Nigeria, I should do so with honesty, integrity, and the interest of the people at heart. Brother Dom, I thank God for the gift of your life and for the example you have set for our family. Your integrity, humility, contentment, and sense of responsibility are qualities worthy of celebration. May God Almighty, who has graciously been with you all these years, grant you good health, His abundant grace, and blessings. Happy 75th birthday, my dearest brother. -PO

SENATOR FRANCIS FADAHUNSI’S INCENDIARY RHETORIC AHEAD OF THE OSUN ELECTION I wish to express my deep regret, and profound concern regarding the recent inflammatory comments and threat-laden rhetoric attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi in the lead-up to the Osun State election on Saturday. As a high-ranking lawmaker representing the people in the National Assembly, Senator Fadahunsi carries a solemn constitutional and moral responsibility to promote peace, uphold democratic norms, and foster unity. It is therefore alarming and unacceptable that a distinguished senator would deploy intimidation, incendiary remarks, or political threats capable of heightening tensions, instilling fear in voters, and potentially inciting electoral violence in Osun State. Elections are meant to be a celebration of democratic franchise - a peaceful exercise through which citizens freely choose their leaders without intimidation, harassment, or coercion. Resorting to threats of force or disruption undermines the integrity of our electoral process, disrespects the electorate, and threatens the fragile peace of the state. I therefore respectfully demand that Senator Fadahunsi retract these harmful statements and tender an apology to the peaceful people of Osun State. All political leaders, stakeholders, and party loyalists across party lines must exercise the utmost restraint, moderate their language, and recommit themselves to peace and democratic decorum. The relevant security agencies must closely monitor inflammatory statements and ensure equal protection for all citizens, election officials, and voters before, during, and after the polls. The democratic mandate belongs to the people, and no individual, regardless of status or political office, should attempt to subvert the will of the people through fear or coercion. I urge the good people of Osun State to remain calm, peaceful, and resolute as they exercise their constitutional civic duty at the polls. Getting elections right is a necessary step towards a New Nigeria that is POssible. -PO

Although democracy in Nigeria 🇳🇬 is young when compared to UK 🇬🇧 & USA 🇺🇸, President Tinubu’s educational discrepancies in UK or US frameworks will lead to the collapse of his presidency under strict standards of integrity. While it’s fair to demand universal transparency, comparing these nations highlights a deep divide between institutional protection and citizen demands. ✅UK Framework (The Integrity Test): The Ministerial Code mandates absolute honesty. In the UK's centuries-old parliamentary convention, misleading the public is a career-ending offense. When Prime Minister Boris Johnson misled parliament, his OWN party forced his resignation. A leader caught fabricating school records would face an immediate, fatal vote of no confidence. ✅US Framework (The Legal Test): Backed by 250 years of constitutional refinement, the US relies on rigorous vetting and strict anti-perjury laws. Congressman George Santos was expelled for fabricating his biography, and Joe Biden abandoned his 1988 campaign for exaggerating his academic ranking. Systemic biographical deception is treated as a “CRIMINAL OFFENCE” guaranteeing impeachment by Congress. ✅The Nigerian Reality (The Elite vs. Citizen Divide): While the political establishment hid behind technical loopholes, arguing removing a president risks "instability", the majority of Nigerians rejected this excuse. For over 170 million people trapped in abject poverty, moral integrity in leadership is an absolute necessity for economic survival. The court's decision was widely viewed as the ruling class protecting itself at the expense of true accountability. In the West, strong institutions treat deception as a threat to public trust. In Nigeria, the system protects the ruling elite, ignoring the public's demand for moral governance. The core of the issue is that the political framework in Nigeria is currently structured to protect the government from the people, whereas the UK and US frameworks, imperfect as they are, have mechanisms where public outrage can actually force a leader out. #Politics #Nigeria #UK #US #Democracy
