Important details: – One option reportedly involves withdrawing around 25,000 troops. A deeper reduction could reach 40,000, against a U.S. presence of roughly 80,000 across Europe. – Germany, Italy and Spain are reportedly among the main countries being considered for reductions. – No final decision has been announced. Some options could also move forces within Europe toward NATO’s eastern flank, so the eventual locations matter alongside the headline troop count. – At least four sets of options are due to reach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth by November 6. That’s a review milestone, not a deadline for troops to leave. – Washington wants European allies to take more responsibility for their defense. The review also examines military spending and whether allies allow U.S. forces to use their bases and airspace, following disputes over the Iran war. – A smaller withdrawal has already been announced: around 5,000 troops from Germany. The Pentagon said in May that it expected that move to take six to twelve months. – Congress has put conditions on funding deeper cuts.
