Mathematicians are debating if "equals" in equations like 2 + 2 = 4 means things are exactly the same or just look the same, causing problems for computers checking math.
This issue impacts EVERYTHING: errors in computer algorithms could affect everything from online banking to GPS systems.
This debate is important because it affects how computers verify mathematical proofs.
Incorrect data in medical software could lead to wrong diagnoses or treatment plans. Bugs in everyday apps and software could become more common and harder to fix.
Rethinking the foundations of mathematics might actually be needed, which means redefining basic concepts to ensure consistency.
