Fatima Maada, the First Lady of Sierra Leone, has inquired into the reasons for Africa’s continued lack of a permanent position on the United Nations Security Council.
During an informal discussion at Harvard she challenged this disparity, seeking an explanation for Africa’s ongoing omission from permanent membership of one of the most influential deliberative organs in the world.
She observed that “Africa has 54 countries and more than 1.5 billion people, yet it still has no permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.”
The Security Council comprises five permanent members China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States each of which possesses the right of veto.
States from Africa may occupy seats on the Council when elected, yet none enjoys permanent membership or the power of veto.
