🌒 We are honored to be selected by @NASA to advance our compact lunar dust and surface-charging monitoring instrument, in collaboration with @NASAGoddard.
We are very happy to share that @mission_space was selected by @NASA_Technology to advance LEEMR, our lunar dust and surface-charging monitoring instrument, in collaboration with Goddard Space Flight Center! For a small team, this means a lot. We started Mission Space around a simple technical gap: space operators need better environmental data where missions actually happen. First in orbit. Now, increasingly, on the lunar surface. LEEMR is designed for local measurements around lunar infrastructure: landers, rovers, habitats, power systems, tools, and surface stations. It will measure dust density variation, dust charging levels, and surface charge accumulation in real time. As Artemis and commercial lunar missions move from single demonstrations toward repeated surface operations, this kind of local data becomes part of the infrastructure. We are honored to be in this cohort alongside companies such as @Axiom_Space, @LMSpace, @RogueSpaceCorp, @astrobotic, @LunarOutpostInc, and @zeno_power.

Most expensive satellite missions lost or seriously disrupted by #spaceweather ☀️💨🛰️ • ADEOS-II (2003 — on the photo): ~$640M satellite lost after a solar-array power failure during a geomagnetic storm. • Telstar 401 (1997): ~$200M communications satellite permanently lost. Electrostatic discharge suspected. • Anik E2 (1994): ~$300M satellite lost attitude control during a geomagnetic disturbance. Service recovery took months; the spacecraft survived. • Galaxy 15 (2010): Lost command capability for months, resulting in a $104.1M accounting impairment. And in 2000, Japan’s ASCA X-ray observatory permanently lost attitude control after storm-enhanced atmospheric drag overwhelmed its control system.

And it’s not even the most expensive mission lost to space weather 🧐
Historical incident — A $200M satellite 🛰️ January 11, 1997: AT&T lost its $200M Telstar 401 shortly after a solar-wind pressure pulse. ABC, Fox and PBS feeds required rerouting. NASA documented simultaneous magnetopause compression. pwg.gsfc.nasa.gov/istp/outre…

We’re witnessing something really important, and I don’t think we fully realize just how big a deal it is.

In Jan 1994, Telesat's Anik-E1 and E2 lost attitude control hours apart. TV, news feeds and northern phone service went down. Canada's regulator documented C$13.3M in recovery costs. Energetic-electron internal charging was implicated. doi.org/10.1029/2012SW000811

The scariest things in space are invisible. 👻 ☀️ Solar energetic particles that can damage spacecraft electronics. ⚡ Geomagnetic storms that disrupt communications and navigation. ☢️ Radiation that can threaten astronauts and trigger satellite anomalies. 🎃🚀
